Congratulations Phil Nixon on Hants Avon record

Thanks for that Neil, I beginning to think that I was going nuts. I could understand it if I had intended to belittle Nigel's fish, because then I would have expected his reaction. As it is, this strange accusation coming out of the blue has left me reeling....I just cannot come to terms with it.

My old laptop went to PC heaven a few days back, and I only bought the new one I am using now yesterday. So, I get back on line and the first thing I find is 129 new emails, which took me ages to sift through, followed by this sad situation. Not for the first time, I am wondering whether the advice I was recently given by master Lush was actually spot on, that he may have hit the nail right on the head. Perhaps I would be a lot better off staying away from forums and the like, it seems that there are far too many occasions when a perfectly innocent thing can be turned on it's head and made into something it was never intended to be. I know that all too well, because sometimes I get things all wrong and jump to the wrong conclusions too. We anglers are a rather odd, touchy old lot aren't we? Almost as bad as the rest of humanity I guess :)

Cheers, Dave.
Dave I think I can say I understand you a little, one thing you are not is malicious, you have a wicked sense of humour that this place would be a lot poorer for if you left. I had a lot of stick over comments I made that in hindsight could have been worded better, none more so than the celeb anglers gear being stolen and I said that not to worry he is sponsored etc...wow!!! stand back and light the blue touch paper, it was open season on me, however one or two more level headed souls did come to my rescue...bless 'em.
So not that you need defending really, but to reiterate I really cannot see what you posted that was out of order, but what I would like is some on here to stand up and say so too.

I don't know anything about this Salmon malarky , I presume it's one of these dreaded facebook fall outs ? Whatever has gone on it would be a shame and a loss if you left the forum Nigel .

I have now been pointed in the direction re the Salmon aspect to this . TBH , [and I have read it carefully], I don't think Dave Gauntlett's comments were directed at the veracity of those beautiful Salmon captures . I think this is just an unfortunate mix up . Come back Nigel , life's too short . Anyway never mind the silver tourists ,that Avon record barbel is a peach of a fish , well done .:D

Correct, can't remember too many threads kicking off in relation to extending arms, sausage fingers and Salmon.

Another vote in support of Dave G, and no, i have never met the man in person. But what i will say, is that from the time i joined the forum, Dave has always come across as a genuine kind human being, ( one of the nice guys ). Yes, some of his posts are that long I've fell asleep before I've finished reading them :D But i honestly believe, he would never intentionally try to belittle anyone. I had a really rough time a couple of years back. Lost my dad, the woman i loved, and my best friend, all within 3 months. Dave didn't have to, but he took the time to p.m. me with messages of support, which i greatly appreciated. So thank you Dave, i consider you a true friend, and maybe, hopefully, one day, we can finally meet up for a days fishing together. :)

Many thanks Mike, Neil and Derek, I truly appreciate your coming forward and publicly offering your view on this. I also understand why others perhaps have not. What I don't understand is how or why this dreadfully sad saga ever happened, and I probably never will.

I would love to meet Nigel and talk to him face to face about this, try to see what on earth it was that prompted his reaction to my genuinely innocent remarks. Life, as Mike said, is too short for enmity based on mistakes to be allowed to roll on in this desperately sad way.

Cheers, Dave.

Hi men ,

Dave , as I have found out as well , the written word can be miss interpreted , but people can see it seems like crossed lines , hope its sorted , carry on fella.

OK Mark. I was thinking of perhaps trying to stay away from controversial issues, because I have been involved in upsets on certain subjects that always tend to end that way. However, that would have made no difference on this occasion, because this was anything but a controversial issue.

The thing is, the more I think about this, the more illogical it all is. Nigel made his comments on this thread, not the one with his salmon, after I had a posted on here that I was glad to see Phil Nixon holding his record Avon Barbel in the correct way, rather than it being held out at arms length towards the camera to enlarge it. I made that comment because (A) On the madness that is Facebook etc, all the new kids on the block do that daily, and then try to claim new records, and (B) There has been a spate of it local to me recently, which has upset folk whom I respect, so yes, I do have a bee in my bonnet about that issue.

The illogical bit is that Nigel seems to be saying that I was accusing him of doing just that in his salmon pictures. However, when you look at the photo's in question, he IS holding them at arms length....but straight up and down, because he is standing over the fish, while holding them in the water. Not even Penn and Teller could do that AND hold it at arms length towards the camera  I may be a bit muddled in my old age....but I ain't that daft!

Oh dear, I must just let this go. It has driven me nuts with the frustration of being accused of doing something I absolutely didn't do, to the point that it's becoming an obsession. Sorry folk, I will stop now.

Cheers, Dave

Dave

Just to add that I took no offence at all regarding the comments you made about my fish and fully understood what you meant.

Firstly - no problem with Dave and have enjoyed his posts on here. No reason to doubt that he's a good egg.

However - in Nigel's defence he posts a picture of a stupendously big Salmon, and the first comment seems to me at least, to be questioning it's claimed size. I know that when a pic of the same fish was posted onto FB there were a fair few bitter comments questioning it's size which must be so frustrating to read. For me it's sad when the Royalty produces such a special fish that there are some who seek it as an opportunity to knock the fishery.

Also, the fish was caught by Peter Fine. Nigel was only reporting the capture, not claiming it for himself.

Anyway - well done again to Phil, the real subject behind this thread!

Well done again Phil, ..fantastic fish.
For the record, I've always valued Nigel's and Dave's posts on here but find it depressing that what was supposed to be a celebration of Phil's record has descended into a tiff. I don't do FB so I assumed that something had gone down elsewhere. Social media brings us all together, but a misinterpreted sentence or perseived slight of one's integrity does things that would never happen if we were all sitting round a pub table having a chat and a beer.
This forum would be poorer for not having both Dave's and Nigel's imput imo ...roll on the 16th..;)

I also thought this was an argument that had carried over from Facebook, or from another forum. I'm surprised that Dave's comments should have elicited the response that they did, I must admit I also wondered if it was the same fish - so I'm quite pleased I didn't ask! :D

Dave - you are a cankerous and argumentive old bugger :p, but I do enjoy your posts (and rants) so do please keep posting (and ranting). This forum is made all the more interesting by your involvement.

Joe, a lot of people thought this sad mess was a carry over from an argument on one of those evil 'social media' sites, but not so...what you see on here is all there was, hence my amazement at the reaction. I don't frequent the those sites, exactly because this sort of thing happens. I have my own Facebook page, which I rarely even look at, and one club page.

However, I have been told that there WAS nasty stuff about this catch on one of those awful places, and it is anger at that which made Nigel jump to a very wrong conclusion about my innocent question. The pictures confused you, and they certainly did me. Such is life mate, you can't win 'em all. Are you absolutely certain that you don't want to push the rewind button on this Joe, and this time YOU ask the question :p

Cheers, Dave.
