combi rig

Anyone using stiff flouro boom with braid? Made any difference to your catches?
Forgive an old duffer who is not into rigs, but isn't a stiff flouro with braid the same [or similar] to using a coated braid with the last 3-4 inches "skinned" ??:confused:

I use one of about 4-5 feet on the Trent most of the time. Has it made any difference to my catch rate? No. Everyone knows you only need to chuck a pellet out and within seconds a barbel will be hanging off the end ;)

Had my best ever day on the Wye this season on the combo rig, was it down to the rig though ? I like the fact that the knotless knot is in braid, I do find fluro tends to break at that point on occasion.

I use combi rigs quite often, not sure it makes any odds but gives me confidence. Still catch bugger all though.

you don't need a hair, d rig?

Most of my barbel fishing is done with a combi these days although not for the same reasons a carp angler would construct one - and not with flouro! The main body of my hooklink is 12lb big game mono with a couple of inches of braid on the end to the hook. The mono part is used for abrasion resistance, i could fish 12lb big game straight through and catch a few but i've found the fish on the heavily fished stretches i frequent are more than capable of detecting mono or flouro and reject baits - the supple braid is far harder for them to detect when hovering over the bait and they pick it up with confidence - game over for mr barbel as my hook arangement is very agressive and usually hooks the fish if they pick it up properly. I can't use soft braids for the whole hooklink as they lack abrasion resistance and on the rivers i fish that is a must. I could use coated braids but they are expensive when constructing 3, 4 or 5' hooklinks and i've yet to find one with a core that is as supple as the uncoated braids i use.

David you are on the wrong website!! D Rig........

Chris, just to clarify my earlier post - the stiff section of a carp anglers combi is used to kick the bait away from the lead in stillwater - making for a more direct contact to the lead when the fish picks up the bait. In running water this is not required because the flow will straighten the hooklink for you - the main reason we use it, as Ade has pointed out - we're tight!

Shows what I know! I thought it was an anti-ejection rig thought up by those discerning thinking anglers who fish for tench. Maybe I am wrong though cos on the ones I tie if the braid is more than three eighths of an inch long it’s a waste of time and your fluro needs to be stiffer than a stiff thing, Ooohh-err missus face
Other than that it’s as Ade says a cheap option. But it aint exactly the classic combi rig is it?

Been using 35lb Seaguar flouro for the boom and 25lb kryston supa nova for the braid, which has been 1/4" long, works very very very well!

Kevin - you're probably right! My understanding of carp rigs is limited to say the least. My rig certainly isn't a classic combi - just using the term loosely to describe a combination of two different materials.

Chris,

Your experience is the same as mine regarding hooklengths, and that is it is their physical properties and not the thickness or overt visibility of the materials that makes them so successful. A scaled down version works wonders for Tench as well. They are a devil to tie until you get the hang of it but well worth the effort.

After watching the way fluro works under water in barbel days and ways, I'm thinking of trying a combi rig with a longer section of braid, say about 6+ inches. Anyone tried this or any thoughts on the idea?

Albright knot gets easier with practice, the boom needs to be stiff as and the hinge is then mega flexible , much more so than coated braids, i have used 20lb amnesia, 20lb korda mouthtrap and done well with them. Hydrolink is the only other option that gets close

Is it?
