Cold Water Methods?

Afternoon All Barbelers.

Well it wont be long now before we are faced with the cold water conditions again, last year i used scalded pellet mixed to a method style mix in a feeder the year before paste ball stringers to match my boilie hookbait, there wasn't much difference fish wise between either method. This year i was thinking of going with scalded mushed elips pellets method mix style, seems hard to know which way to go in the colder water conditions so come on lads lets hear your thoughts and no holding back on your little edges:eek:

Steve, Hahaha.....Or stay indoors:rolleyes:

They have to hold back when they are sitting on those little edges John...otherwise they will fall in :p. Seriously though, I am looking forward to some good answers to your question....I think I am going to need all the help I can get this year :D

I tend to do the obvious...scale down to lighter gear, single/double maggots etc., with bigger smelly baits in floods...but like you, I think a few Ideas from fresh minds willing to pass on good tips would help a lot.

Cheers, Dave.

The Chairman on Thursday

Young Paul's was as fresh as a daisy until I invited him to the Castle and got him started on our Lady Guides and home-distilled Beauchamps Original absinthe.

Damned pity, as he might have been able to contribute something different.

As ever,

B.B.

As soon as the minnows go its maggots for me , with riddled luncheon meat as a change of plan, dont use pellet at all in cold weather at all.

Had some cracking Barbel so far this season... but now its a case of if the conditions suit I'll have a go but if not I've got big Chub to trot for and a Pike PB to up with some nice spots to try on a few rivers.

Must admit that I`ve never had any need to change tactics, just areas.

Mmmmmmm Chub or Pike Fishing???????????

I must admit I don't change anything, as I still only ever float fish for Barbel, but I do tend to use less bait, I knock Caster on the head and feed a lot less Hemp.

I expect I shall fish Maggot all Autumn and Winter, but I will certainly change my venues a bit, I find small river fishing to be the way to go in the colder months, so it is:- The Lea (still) and The Kennet, The Ivel, The Colne (the one that meets The Thames near Staines not the one where they all wear flat caps) and The Gade for me from now on!
I must admit for me this is the start of the best fishing of the year, I can't wait for the first frosts!

After last year winter and year before I be putting the barbel rods away less we get some floods etc and will be getting my pike rods out to try and beat a pb that i had for 24 years. Oh and being nice to chubby cheeks so he take me on his boat (you know who you are after the stick you give me )

weve caught a few on the corn lately so i'll be giveing that a whirl tomorow, plus theres always a chance of a half decent chub or even a bream if the barbel don't want to play.
why not try a say 10=12mm fruity boilie.
what you got to loose.

I'm going to cut out the use of pellets as the winter sets in, and may actually cease using them altogether in the future. Boilies with paste and perhaps stinky meat in high water conditions and in low, clear conditions hemp and caster. Pretty standard stuff really.

All I have to do now is fit in a search for big perch, roach, chub and pike with the time available, I just hope this winter is more friendly this year.

So when do you guys believe winter starts??

Now, given the nights have gone colder?
When we get the first frosts?, or
by some other determining factor?

Need to know as i have a long journey to the wye tomorrow and was still preparing a pellet approach.........

I would tend to start the different approach after the first frost others may differ..

Chris,

Is your thoughts about giving up feeding pellets to do with the risk to fish regarding the high oil content and the amount that goes into our rivers over a season??
