Cold Water Methods?

If you can afford it, a well applied HNV bait will take some beating ! Not cheap, but deadly in cold weather.
Off the shelf I would go for Trigga Ice Boilies/Pellets (Chub magnets though), Source Boiles and Hinders Blitz Boilies/Multimix/Paste.

As always location is everything, keep feed to a minimum (tiny PVA stockings) and try to identify a feeding period.

If conditions are not suitable for Barbel fishing then I go after Grayling, Roach, Chub and Dace, much more enjoyable than sitting behind static barbel rods !

Regards Paul M.

So good to see so many talking about baiting in moderation.
better than those "experts" ;)telling you to pile it in (mainly tackle business employed) without mention of the river size or time of year.

And Dave. It wasn't a transfusion she said you needed....but a transplant -a minor to major one :D:eek:

Kempy and Hutchy made some very good flavours.
Hutchy is still around and doing some of his originals MC, SA, CM, MS, S etc and some others.
Water solubles - simples.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob,

The trouble with Hutchy recently was the price....though I must admit I haven't looked for about 18 months/2 years. It seemed that for whatever reason, he started marketing his own stuff a while back, rather than going through his previous agencies, and the price went sky high. Didn't make much sense to me, so I stopped buying it, :p Haven't seen any of Kempys stuff for years, but nice to know it's still around. Of the other originals, John Baker is still available, and of course Big Bill Baitmaker (even without Mr. Paisley :D) is going strong....surprising actually, the list goes on and on when I think about it, WAY too boring to list them all....I guess you can't keep a good'n down :D

Cheers, Dave.

Hi David,

Big Bill and John Baker are not so cheap either though.:(

Why we are talking about Rod what did the secret agent smell of??? I know that it was another stinker but i never smelt it???

John,
Like walking past a Chinese Take Away curry house. Very persistent and very effective. You only need a tiny dose. Smells something like Source boilies..........
One all time great but a right pain to get off of hands and everything.

Dave,
Generally find the prices reasonably competitive - some of the Hutchy types require low doses.

Cheers

Sounds good to me mate....but you must remind me to give you the old one to take home with you...only they get so tetchy if you try to change what the've been used to, don't they.......:p:D

Good job your sense of humour is as dreadful as mine Graham :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

I should have some somewhere John, I will try to dig it out for you. Having said that, I did have a major clearout a few months back....

I will let you know if I find it mate :)

Cheers, Dave.

Hi again Bob,

It was actually boilies and base mixes I was looking at when I was astounded by the prices. Mind you, if you have found Rod to be still competitive, I may have got it wrong...it was probably prices for 25k, not 10k as I thought...wouldn't surprise me....I know me :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

Thank you David and Bob...

Im sure that some of rods flavours ie monster crab/secret agent and the sense appeals could be blended together to make a good attractor for barbel?

I must admit I don't change anything, as I still only ever float fish for Barbel, but I do tend to use less bait, I knock Caster on the head and feed a lot less Hemp.

I expect I shall fish Maggot all Autumn and Winter, but I will certainly change my venues a bit, I find small river fishing to be the way to go in the colder months, so it is:- The Lea (still) and The Kennet, The Ivel, The Colne (the one that meets The Thames near Staines not the one where they all wear flat caps) and The Gade for me from now on!
I must admit for me this is the start of the best fishing of the year, I can't wait for the first frosts!

I'll come an invade Keith, see you soon ! I'm having a practice on a little river near me this weekend. Still got the line off the bottom on the pin though mate ;)

Well you can't educate pork, plus I can't face the stick from the locals.

I've always thought: deeper swims, mild spells and less feeding.
Oh, and I should actually go fishing a bit more. ;)

cheers

Mike
