Cleaning cork handles

After cleaning is it worth applying anything to the bare cork.????
Mine are spotless at the moment and wondering if ghee need some protection. .

one light coat of cork sealer will protect and make the next close season clean dead easy. Dont go mad with it though.

A couple of years ago I made an aborted attempt to get into rod restoration. I was given the tip on a traditional angling forum to use fine wire wool to clean cork handles. Works a treat.

Thanks Marty, will Danish oil do..... lots about cleaning aftercare too lol...

I have never used Danish oil, after googleing it i don't think it will do the same job.

get yourself some U40 cork sealer ;) and don't forget 1 light coat only.

(if you go too heavy it will darken your cork considerably, and may clog up the pores, which you don't want to do)

Bit late in the day with this one but, I have always used very diluted Fairy, (you know it makes sense) combined with a good nailbrush, ie with real bristles. Never a scourer. The nailbrush get into the little grooves in the cork and does an admiral job.

Rinse off thoroughly, dry with a good towel, leave to stand in an airy place.

Job done. :)

Try a pumice stone if it's really acky . I restore rods as a hobby and the warm soapy water and a nail brush sorts all but the grimiest of cork handles

Sorry to probably upset people, but I just cant believe that a post about cleaning the cork handles on a rod has run to 4 pages, forgive me, but isnt just getting a slightly abrasive pan scrub, a dab of washing up liquid , hot water, and a bit of elbow grease simple enough for even the most un "diy " ers amongst us.

If anybody has problems, I will clean the cork handles on your rods for a very modest £10.00 per rod plus postage...

:D:D:D

Just go fishing, dont bother too much about the state of your rods, the fish dont care, and neither does anybody else in all probability.... unless they are tackle tarts.

Dave.
