Chub Fishing

Rhys a cracking rod for chub is the shimano purist classic, quiver and Avon section and can be changed from 11 to 12ft with small eyeless extension, really happy with mine

Have a look at a Harrisons 1lb 6oz avon, they are superb to use. I find all my other avon's stay at home nowadays.

I've looked at that Chris, but can only find it in 12ft, which is fine for big rivers, but I like the option of the 10ft for smaller rivers given with the method feeder combo. I'm just wondering if there's a big difference between the two?

Rhys, take a look at the Preston C series 11ft feeder rod, they are superb, and all drennan / Preston Q tips are interchangable so you have masses of choice, i hate 12ft tip rods and this was easily the best 11 footer i could find.

Oh, and all that 12ft gives you more control close in thing over an 11footer, thats simply cobblers ! (sorry Nick/Stewart :) ) Once they are both bent double there is not much difference at all, and anyway the 12 footer is probably going to be all nice and tangled in the tree branches anyway !!

Hi Mick, just how light in action are those Harrison blanks ? i've been looking for ages for a nice light 11ft 1lb ish t.c. rod for perching, its amazing just how little choice there is out there if you don't want a bloody 12ft pound and three quarter ---- etc etc !

Each to their own Simon - personally I HATE 11ft tip rods and wouldn't dream of using one in a million years! :D :D

Seriously though, this is clearly a case of personal preference, so I don't think you should necessarily presume that you are right and we are wrong.

Hi Stewart, fact is that when an 11 and 12 footer are bent right over there is surprisingly little difference, also its a fact that a longer rod is more likely to get all tangled up in foliage, therefore i would have to conclude that you are 'not right' :)

"surprisingly little difference" - can I infer from this that there is still some difference then?

My rod never gets tangled in trees or foliage :)

Yes mate "Not much difference" and "Surprisingly little difference" means that there is a difference ! Not enough of a difference to affect the outcome of most scraps though ! and anyway 12 footers put the Quiver too far away from my failing eyes to make out those crafty little bites from the fearfullest of all fishes ;) Pity CG's not allowed to comment anymore cos he would have liked this thread :D

Another vote for the TFG Whisper River and Stream 11ft. Really nice chub rod with the quiver top. Avon top leaves a bit to be desired but I never use it, so it's not a big problem. With the quiver, it's near perfect. If money weren't an issue I'd check out the Harrison or a Carbonactive from Preston.

I tend to take cheesepaste once the very cold weather sets in. With these current temps on the wane but it not being mega cold i still find a bit of boilie wrapped in paste is a good bet. And I keep a tin of french garlic Spam at the bottom of the bag, too.

Reel is the Stradic 4000 x GTM. Line 6lb Berkley Trilene.

Swims? Any likely looking spot and I usually walk miles and miles and miles...

What's happened? I thought he'd been very quiet.

If he could comment, I'm sure he'd agree with you though Si! :) So I will pipe down about the virtues of my 12ft rod, otherwise everyone else will get bored of us comparing sizes! :D

Hi Simon,

The Harrison 11' Avon has a nice all through action. I have a pair. they really are a joy to use. You will not be over gunned useing one for Perch, I had a 2lber on wednesday that put a good bend in the rod. With the soft action I do'nt seem to suffer many hook pulls while playing fish.As I said, highly recommended.

Mick

Sounds just the job mate, i had considered that rod before but was put off by the seemingly high t.c. rating, just need to find one to have a look at now ! cheers.

The 1.06 Avon is a through action rod and just made one for a customer in ultra matt finish with spliced in quiver tip. His main requirement was for perch.
There is also the 11' 'Torrix' Avon which is also through action but a bit heavier in the TC at 1.5.
Cheers
Bob

Just got a Drennan series 7 1.5tc specialist avon/quiver . Used it for first time today on middle trent and didnt manage a chub but had 2 barbel 7lb 1oz and 7lb 14oz on steak and it handled them brilliantly and cant wait to take a chub on it

As much as I love barbel fishing, I had the pleasure of a fantastic suprise pb of a chub at just over 5lb on a 10mm halibut on Monday night

just over 5lb ? what did it actually weigh ? Only went chubbing as frost and temp drop should have laid barbel low while temp stabilise

I own a couple of 11ft TFG River and Stream and find them perfect for small streaming.

Just as an aside. I recall someone putting up a brilliant way of preparing cheesepaste some years back. It involved Parmasan, Danish Blue and a microwave. I tried it on the Teme and was very surprised with just how good the bait worked.

Unfortunately I`ve forgotten how to do the bait! Can anyone remember this one?

Not tried that method to make the paste but i do equal quantities of short pastry and which ever cheese i want, roll the pastry out, grate cheese and spread over pastry, fold edges in, then just keep flattening and kneadng in your hands, works a treat.
