Chasing chub....

It looks like my last cast of the season since it ends tomorrow, and I had to take the chance. While working from home during my lunch break, I found the ball of experimental cheese paste (new recipe) in the freezer and a few slices of old bread. I grabbed my quiver rod and walked to the nearby Thames tributary.

After losing a good chub in a snag on my first cast, I moved downstream and cast near a fallen tree. A few minutes later, I hooked into an angry chub. This time, I pulled hard to keep it from snagging, and when I saw it in the net, I knew it was a good fish. After weighing it at 6.17 pounds, I was thrilled. It's not my PB, but it’s the biggest chub I've caught from that tributary.

Sorry HZbut what did it weigh in Lbs/oz
6-17 is a new one on me
Lovely fish whatever

I ventured out today, man was that water cold!

Today the river was very low and clear, it froze again last night and the high was 7 where I fished. I think that combination killed the particular swim that I fished and after a couple of hours of horrible cold wading I only managed one chub of a pound or two and a barbel of 4 or 5lb.
My feet are still aching, I can't get over how cold the water was, a downstream northerly enhanced the cold water and 7 degree air temp.

Nice Ian.

You may of mentioned before? Sorry if it's the case... What's your set up here other than the unmistakable reel? 😊👍

Thanks Julian 🙂.

if you mean the line etc, the line I swear by is daiwa sensor and I nearly always use 6lb straight through to the hook. The hook I used today was a drennan acolyte gripper size 12's.
The float is a 4 1/2 gram bolo form Andrew Burt on this forum. I really like Richard Isaics floats also, excellent quality floats!
I either use a olivettee and droper shot, or a bulk shot and dropper.
So, a very, very simple no faffing about with swivels etc etc set up, just how I prefer it 😉👍.

Hi Ian.

Was wondering what the rod was buddy, & thanks for the other details to. Nice to see how you float fishing anglers put things into practice 😊

My hands were freezing even I were ledgering, I must admit I am not brave enough to wading in today’s conditions

I had a last hurrah trotting a float on the river, and very enjoyable it was to 🙂.
Today was a similar kind of day to yesterday with a quite nasty cold northerly wind and an air temp of 7 degrees upon arrival at late morning which had rose to 9 degrees when I left at about 3.30pm.
The difference today was the wind dropped off for a spell and the sky cleared allowing the bright sunshine to warm me up, it was great! After an hour or so of the nice spell the wind got up again and the clouds came over giving me several showers, luckily I had a thin greys waterproof wading jacket on, cracking little waterproofs which I would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a lightweight waterproof packable jacket.
Anyhow, during that nice spell and a bit after I managed to catch seven barbel, but oddly only a single small chub. Apparently the anglers who are legering are picking up some very nice chub!
So, I had a very nice close to the season, roll on the 16th of june!

Ian, I need a lesson for catching barbel on the float please !!! Ive had 3 amazing days float fishing for chub and barbel, only thing is I only hit one barbel and I lost that !! I did catch over 40 4lb+ chub though on the Wye and Severn so I was doing something right.

Anytime Cliff, although, going off the above I think you can give me the lesson 😉👍
