Boiling spikes

Hi Dave

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go.

Its been a long time since I saw you on the Kennet- hope everything is going well for you.

Neil

Hi Neil

All good mate hope you are well.

I gave up my Thatcham ticket a couple of seasons ago and stopped barbel fishing and went back to carping on a local syndicate:eek:

But we have just rejoined a club on the upper Lea;) the barbel are not big but it's great fun.

after quite a few evenings out in the dark and experiment with different spikes plastic and metal and ways of attaching them I've now settled on a set up that is working well and easy to use in the dark. no barbel on it yet but plenty of chub to 6.6lb and my bite to fish conversion rate as improved and I don't have any faffing about in the dark with hair stops, glue or tools of any kind.

I tried these plastic ones http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/14-MIXED-...310774?hash=item5d71dda976:g:5LcAAOSwdqRXiMlb at the start I thought they were ok tended to split the boilie to oftern, I then tried http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Phoxinus-...900538&hash=item56809f9658:g:MXkAAOSwB4NWzuxd while they're neat having the ring I didn't feel I needed it. I did try attaching them to these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gardner-T...hash=item3a8035e8a7:m:mXyR3OVZlPV36-ry89QPkLw but felt there was no need for them either. however I perhaps would try that set up with big baits, hooks and on big rivers where a more industrial set up may be needed.

So i've settled on a simple size 10 korum expert with a knotless knot, 10lb sink braid, 12mm boilie and one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Matrix-Bo...377707?hash=item362247ff2b:g:uXIAAOSwa8dZy8S7 on a short hair so the boilie sits off the back of the hook with a little bit of paste wrapped round to just leave the point showing. just attaching to a mini bolt rig and a small pva bag on the end.

so far so good

Hi Jason,
Thanks for putting that up,I was looking at those last night, can I ask do you feel they're secure enough on their own,or is the paste adding to that/just for attraction?
I use small baits most of the time on the Loddon and have problems with baits splitting and indeed disappearing.
Thanks also to Dave Collins above, rigs redone for tonight with more bend:)

Regs,John

They secure on them totally fine and I would think they’d take quite a hefty overhead cast.

With paste I’ve just found at the moment the chub like it and I’m getting more bites with it on

Thanks for that,I'll give them a go,every little bit adds to the confidence, bites can be few and far between in the bits of river I fish.
I know some in my area prefer bigger hooks and side hooked baits but personally I've haven't done very well with these over the years, having more success with small baits/smallish hooks.

Cheers,John
