It is in my case. Sure I could buy any of the above mentioned baits.
But I really enjoy making my own baits now, and get a buzz out of catching on something no one else is using. I enjoy making the bait as much as the fishing to be fair.

Yes, no real benefit to having round boilies for barbel fishing. Pretty important for carp anglers using throwing sticks and caterpults to bait up a range. But no obvious advantage for river fishing, AFAIKS.

Source / Trigga Ice / Live System are my go to boillies mainly because chub love them. When you fish the Bristol Avon a few bonus fish help.

I like to do a 2 egg mix couple of days before I’m going and air dry them in the garage i prefer fresh baits to freezer baits

I've done that in the past, taken two base mixes & created my own. Fish aren't going to turn it down if its a food source.

There’s certainly some great tried and test baits out there. I could easily pop into the tackle shop and make a purchase or two.
But I make my own baits I makeup my own basemix, For me It adds another dimension to my fishing experience their almost all I use apart from the tried and tested tinned wonder

I used to make my own boilies from scratch back in the day - 80/90’s. We used to buy our ingredients from the Booker brothers (Colne Valley baits). Later we used JB mixes/ingredients etc.

These days there are really good baits available from many bespoke suppliers, so I just buy frozen stuff. I bulk buy with a couple of mates - so we get top quality bait at advantageous prices. When it comes to actual fishing I use very little bait (low stock venues) and I simply chop free baits in half.

Last Winter I also used a JB supplied paste (for chub) and was quite happy knocking up 1 egg mixes the day before….it worked just as he said it would.

I prefer the natural bait (worm, maggots, snail, crayfish etc) over boilies/pellet. My experience is they out fish boilies most of the time

Having never caught a barbel on a boilie. I've caught them on bacon grill, pellets, pepperami, cheese strings, luncheon meat.... but never a boilie!
What is your preferred flavour and brand?

Having only ever caught on boilies, Mainline Fusion was the one 20 yesrs ago but now Dynamite Source you can't go wrong with.
