Best lightweight umbrella?

I have one of these, not bullet proof by any means and the ground spike is made of cheese. But easily replaced and been really good since. About 2.8kg all in (brolly, carry bag, pegs, guy ropes etc).

had one of these for a few years.i have ditched the centre pole and fitted storm pole adapters makes it lighter and rock solid in the wind.also have the fox have removed the storm adapters and moved them one spoke up making it more solid in the winds

Hi All
Was in angling direct a week ago, looking for a new umbrella and was very impressed with the Diawa brolly, got them to weigh it less than six pounds = 2.7kg which is 100gms more than the korum graphite, but the Diawa has a steel frame, taped seems, and a good quality waterproof fabric for £45 quid! Still thinking about because I want something about 5lbs. The Drennan looks good, but far too expensive!
I have the fox specialist, which is a great brolly, but too heavy and pack down size too big!. Watch this space, I am going to sell it soon!
Regards Wayne
Morning all
A couple of other points
Also when in Angling direct I looked at a 45 inch Leeda brolly which was about 5lbs, but no tapped seams but only £25 quid!
If anyone has an ngt 45 or 50 inch please could you weigh it and give some feedback
The best concept for a lightweight brolly was a Relum "Brolltell" which is a great idea, but not the best quality materials used. It weighs about 5lbs, including two center poles which when put up clip together to make one pole which creates a flat back brolly which is small in size, with large side flaps, so you can sit right back in side with loads of cover. It takes seconds to put up then peg it down and you have a great brolly BUT it does not have tapped seams and it leaks, drip, drip, drip! I think I might try to waterproof it with brick/wall waterproof sealant. Try to post some photos later
I think it's a great concept which could be made again by another tackle company
Regards
Wayne

Wayne, I had an ngt 45 previously. Very light indeed and did the job for what it cost me. Lasted 2 seasons of regular use and kept me dry before needing binning. Think I paid £20 for it. Build quality as expected for a 20 quid brolly, but it never leaked.

Hi Rob
Thanks for the feedback, but I probably get the Diawa, as it looks a quality product, and I've had a Diawa infinity brolly (fiberglass arms) which was fabulous and lasted years! The new Diawa has a steel frame and pole, so I am thinking to replace the steel pole with an alloy one and shorten the steel pole by a couple of inches to save a few ounces!

No idea Rich! - as you know on your Korum the spar diameters are thick so you cant use 'standard' ones without drilling - I know on the Fox Specialist that moving the existing ones would be an 'exercise' - however Fox do supply an aftermarket easy fit adaptor which can be added to additional spars tool free and in seconds! Fox is also flat back with mini storm sides (which I actually don't like / are superfluous - see pic)
Chris,
I’ve had a quick look at the Fox website and can’t find any info on the after market adaptors that you mention. They will probably cost more than a budget brolly but do have anymore info please?
Regards
Bill

Many thanks Terry 👍
Hi Both -

No those wont work with the Fox Specialist - the diameter is too narrow for the spars - for some weird reason the ones you need are a spare for the Ultra Brolly range but aren't listed adjacent to the Specialist brolly on the website - its all pretty confusing but the reality is you'll need two of these -

Product Ref - CUM219-17 Storm Pole Attachment + Holder (x2)

Storm Pole cap.JPG

These fit the spar diameter and have a retaining clip to stop the threaded section sliding back up the spar arm (theres no pressure / screw fit connection etc). They really are a doddle to fit - straighten the spar arm with your hand and pop out of the brolly end pocket - slide on the attachments (the correct way round) and then pop the spar arm back in - takes 30 seconds and no tools - solid.

The website is additionally confusing as they are £12.96ea 'as a set of two items/SKUs' (not £6.96) - that's £25.92 plus post (!!!!) so best to email and order via Fox direct to save disappointment -

Many thanks Chris. As I said the price of a budget brolly 🤣🤣

Unfortunately Jon the fox has the large nose cone because the spoke arrangement is actually a very clever design.
They have made the spokes so short and kept them right back on that brolley, I’m guessing in order to do that you’d need a large chunky mechanism to cope with the amount of leverage applied to such short spokes. If they decreased the size of the mechanism they’d probably have to increase the length of the spokes pushing out the ribs.
I have the Fox and it IS an excellent product, though it doesn't fit into any of their quivers. I eventually bought an Aqua quiver., which is a perfect fit. Let's face it, if you are out on the bank on a wet and windy day, roaming isn't really a fun thing to do.

Received two direct from Fox at £6.96 each. Only ball breaker was the £6.00 carriage!!! Ordered direct from the spares section of their website. 👍 As Chris says, dead easy to fit 😀
Looks like Fox stung me! Good price - may moan at them (unless they've magically reduced their prices) These could also possibly work with the Korum Graphite (rib diameter permitting) . . .?

Fox Specialist DEF fits the Drennan Specialist 3x Rod quiver - that's also 'in' the brolly bag - its a snug but perfect fit!

Hi All
Ordered a Diawa brolly from Angling direct, arrived today, weighed it, 5.12. With a screw in steel pole which weighed 1lb 8oz, swapped it for an alloy screw pole which weighed 8oz less! So have a good quality 50 inch brolly, with a quality cover, tapped seams which weighs 5. 4oz for £45!

By heck Chris they paid for themselves today. The wind was wicked at times and without the storm poles (held nicely by the new attachments) my fox gamp would either have been flattened or doing a Mary Poppins !

Agree - although the Specialist is compact it can still pick up a breeze like all brollys even when set low - just daft that Fox have placed the storm pole attachments where they have as stock - forces you to buy new attachments I suppose!

Your advise would be much appreciated!

Currently looking for a high quality lightweight umbrella thats still robust enough to withstand some Wind an general abuse.

I have a Korum day shelter but its very small and sometimes a basic umbrella is the better tool.

Not looking for one of those heavy PVC jobs but a slim, lightweight and sturdy one thats not junk that is falling apart after a season.

Thanks much for your help and take care!
I brought standard green 45 inch umbrella in the early 90s that weighed only 1 1/2 kilos or 3 1/2 pounds , used it for 25 plus years never problem but has just broke the pole code on umbrella is Q0080 ????

Why is it that no umbrellas can be made at this weight for roving walking long distance , or can be put in as back up just in case it does rain , or windbreak .

Surely if they could make an umbrella that light 30 years ago why cant we have umbrellas that light in 2023 ??????
Come on tackle producers there is a market for 45 inch standard one an half kilo feather light brolly s

I got a 45 inch standard umbrella from early 1990s weighs only 3 half pounds or 1 half kilo if they could make one that light then , surely they can make one in 2023 that light .

Tackle consultants take NOTE, there is demand for 45 inch featherweight standard brolly
