Best barbel rod for medium sized rivers between £50-150

Do many people actually use the quiver tip sections for barbel fishing?

John, I used to, when I first started barbel fishing but generally speaking wouldn't bother. However, there must be times when the bites are very finicky when it might be worthwhile. I had a good December barbel the other year and the bites were just small pulls, but not as aggressive as the usual chub knocks. Having noticed several and obviously having missed them, I decided to touch-ledger and hit the first sign of a bite. The barbel was the culprit and had me thinking that a quiver tip might have been a useful means of bite indication in such circumstances.

Slightly off topic but it may help the original poster select suitable rods.

The majority of takes I get would take the rod in the river so i find i don't need the subtle indication afforded by a quiver tip.

Although i don't use my quiver tip section for Barbel i do use it for Bream and Tench fishing whilst method fishing

On some rivers that have suffered depleted stocks and where the competition aspect of feeding barbel (and other fish) 'three foot twitches' may not always occur then maybe read this article:

Quivering by Dick Dowing

Could put some additional fish on the bank.

Points from that article noted. Perhaps I will put a quiver top on again and see if my experience is the same. Always pays to make changes and adjust methods from time to time.

Seconded. Still come up for sale on here now and again. I've got 4 so can't justify anymore.

I will probably get another pair if they come up at the right price, at the right time. :)

Use mine on the tidal Trent for barbel, zander, pike and everything in between.

I bought an as-new Daiwa Theory 2 1/4 and a Fox Royale 1 3/4 for £100/ pair last week.
Both lovely rods. I was intrigued by the Theory as it came with a 3oz tip, so I couldn't wait to try it out - I normally fish with 2 1/4 Chimeras on a snaggy river.
I fished tight to a notorious snag that does hold plenty of fish - hooked 6, lost the first one and landed 5 upto 7lb 10 in the session using the tip rod.
My conclusion was that the extra sensitivity helped me see the bite a lot earlier and I was striking rather than waiting for the 3' twitch - rationale being that by the time I see the typical whack around bite the fish is already into the snag? First time I've fished a tip rod like this and happy with the results
The Theory is very powerful and as it was a hit & hold scenario, was a joy to use. with tplenty left in it.Very different to the Chimeras but will definitely be using it again - lovely rod.
