Bennetts of Sheffield closed down

Hi all,

I've just read elsewhere that Bennetts of Sheffield have gone into receivership :(

I'm really surprised by this as they were a company who embraced the internet very early on so should have been ahead of the game.

Sad news for the angling industry.

When I worked in Sheffield I used to love popping in there. There is another tackle shop directly opposite them, forgotten their name now. As said before sad times..

Bought my first ever new rod there in the 70's and plenty of stuff when I lived in Sheffield.

Its a shame.

Some of my early stuff came from Bennets. They were a good company and one of the earlier big players in the mail order and internet. It's a pity that they have gone mechullah, though I am not surprised. In recent years all their ads seemed to cater for the budget end, and let's be honest, it aint 'alf cut throat down that street. Sign of the times indeed.

Surprised because they have been in the game so long, however I stopped using them simply because their service over the last couple of years was not what it was. Orders shorted, no explaination etc. Whenever I ordered from them I could never be sure if I was going to get what I ordered or if it was short that it wasnt' going to turn up a few weeks later, so I simply shopped elsewhere. Customer service, even more so on the internet where there is a huge choice is very important.

I used them mail order many years ago at that time they seemed to stock everything that was available and they were always sending new catalogues and brochures, i thought at the time that their mail order deliveries were slow.

Exactly my experience with them, but they were handy if you were a bit skint as they did an interest free credit scheme which was useful. I was always skint back in the 90`s due to womanising, heavy drinking, gas guzzling motors, a drug problem, court fines, otters etc....:D

Mind you did they ever recover properly from the floods?

Yep happy days circa 1995 B.O ( before Otters )

i had credit from them as well, the 6 month plan was interest free.
they also sent me a JRC bedchair around £160 instead of what i ordered, a JRC chair.
thx bennets....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:)

I've still got a blue furry one piece under-suit I bought from them in the early 80's with the logo on the breast pocket, and I still use it for overnighters in the dead of winter, it's a great bit of kit.....I'm sorry they've gone.

Hmm.

Believe you're right, John - look what I saw on the BBC just now:

"Otters more harmful than heroin or crack, according to a study published in medical journal the Lancet."

Now, if you'll excuse, I have a Lady Guide and a bottle of Beauchamps Originals "Green Meanie" absinthe waiting in the Library.

As ever,

B.B.

I think the floods may have sounded the deathnell for them, I went in earlier this year and was shocked that the only part of the shop open was the first part as you walked in.
Very sad indeed.

Best Regards
Dave

Shame that a big name in mail order tackle has gone. However, I'm not in the least bit surprised. The internet seemed to have lessened their impact and their prices in recent years were no better than your friendly local retailer. If I buy from the net or mail order it's because my local can't get something or the item is much cheaper (inc P+P). Bennetts didn't come anywhere near close to the latter, I can think of at least five places much closer to home that would consistently beat Bennetts on price. To that end I was never likely to make a trip to them and I wasn't going to buy mail/internet order.

I have to agree with you totally Chris, it is sad and I ordered a few bits in the past from there catalogues but nostalgia aside they didn't really move on, when at one point they were pioneering in mail order and the internet. The pricing was a bit too ambitious compared with other bricks and mortar shops with an online presence let alone competing against online sales only shops.
I wish all the best of luck to the staff that worked there.

I wouldn't mind betting that a Phoenix will emerge from the flames. Minus the acounts of those who've just had their fingers burnt.
