bags or mesh on severn

You started it Colin, you tell us!

The vast majority of barbel anglers targeting the bigger fish generally avoid feeder tactics, so are you saying they're all wrong?

No I'm not saying they're wrong, I often fish a straight lead, even a link leger and feed (if any) by hand, catapult or dropper.
Regards the Middle Severn barbel being small and numerous, THEY ARE!!

On the basis the 'Middle Severn' is classified as (roughly) Shrewsbury to Stourport, in between those two point how many fish with weights into teens have you caught or heard of, I'm guessing not many?!

It's not for me to state first my definition of "match styled approach"; really it's for those that disagreed with the statement (without asking exactly what I meant by it), to state what thay assumed it meant and what they disagreed with.

How is that being facetious ? You said it irritates you

Fish hear the splash and to them it's a dinner bell. Thousands of fish are caught every year on the feeder, if fish were that spooky people wouldn't use the method would they ? Because it wouldn't be effective.

Personally I don't think fish are as clever as some people seem to think. All this Carbology doesn't appeal to me personally :)

I was going to post the same..that fish associate the splash of the feeder with FOOD!!!! Same with pellets I was told that the 'plunk' is food porno to many a barbel....just aim your catty skyward and hang on to those rod/rods:)

which spod rod for match fishing carbology tactics on the middle severn when using pva bags for big girls in low water conditions at the start of the season with a south westerly wind? oh and at night ?

Sam, if you're fishing in streamer weed use your feeders like uncle Stevo showed you but tuck the baited hook into the bottom of the feeder, once you have got through the surface weed it is usually clear underneath.

I would like to remind anyone thinking the feeder is a small fish method that the Dove record fell to simple feeder tactics and was no fluke.

But for those hell-bent on using PVA doesn't making mesh ones up with an oily mix and leaving them a while increase the melt time ? Think I saw it on a Korda DVD. That was stick mixes though thinking about it. Oh well the idea's there

Yes oil does slow down the breakdown speed of pva but, it is definitely better pulling your hook length through th pva, like I stated in my first post on this thread.

I agree that the feeder aproach isn't just a small fish method and that good fish do fall to it but in my mind it isnt selective enough and catching a couple of splashers can mess up your chances of a better fish.
Sam, pva sticks with a oil content will get down to the bottom in even deep water but like Ade says a feeder fished as he says would do the same job, also method feeders will usually get down to the bottom intact if using a stiffish mix.

I can answer that question very easily, ONE, and that's in forty years of trying.

All joking aside, this autumn when I venture out on the Severn, I'm planning on trying the carpy matchman puddle-pig tact of firing 2 pellets every minute, high in the air; plink plonk sort of thing....
Initially over a lead and then running a float through the swim, I bet it works!!

Forget the pva mesh or bags sam, why not just get a bait boat?..and a portable tv & dvd with the latest dumper druck to carry all your stuff..:D:D:D:D:D:D:eek:

Because if the batterys die i wouldn't want to watch a few hundred quid float off downstream to highley

This seems to be in contrast to what you were advising on here last year Rich, Do you remember this? [/I]

Blimey Adrian - I do hope you didn't waste too much of your day looking that one up? And I do feel slightly insulted that you went to all that trouble to try and catch me out. Anyone would think I was a published writer.....

There might be a chance that my approach has changed? Perhaps? I do still use a feeder from time to time, particularly after rain when the water's higher. My comments were less about tactics, more about the perils of watching many too many angling DVDs.

Colin let me know when you fish the middle, and if you don't mind I'd love to come and watch the king of the Severn in action, I reckon I'd really learn something;-)
