Advice on a medium feeder, winklepicker, light Avon type rod. Rivers.

Didn't realise Cotswold Rods were Ashton Keynes, I lived and worked nearby in the past, can't find details of feeder rod you ordered, it was referenced in a web report, but locked out. If you could advise via pm if you like that would be great. Not cheap I know...

Yes that Roach has done the rounds Tim, your Shakey was a subtle piece of kit compared to my JW Wilson Avon. Back in the day the quivers were longer and more sensitive, and not feeder referenced.
 
Personally I find interchangable tips on Avon class rods a necessity, especially during the colder months when one week all you need is a 1.5 oz tip and the following week a 2-3 oz tip. If you can find one, a Fox Avon quiver 12' .075 lb RD3387 is a superb tool, but like hens teeth now, as few folk pass them on. I love mine. I also have a Drennan Series 7 1.25 tc Specialist Avon, which is also a lovely rod. I have others (don't we all), though those I can readily recommend. The Korum 1.5 tc Multi tip is also sweet btw.

The feeder rod is not out yet, Mark told me he doesn't like the current design so there will be another development iteration.

I have met Mark Everard Bristol Avon, he was able to access all areas because of his influence with EA etc, he certainly took advantage.

The BA was certainly a great big Roach river back then, and 30 years plus since, I caught my biggest roach at 2.75, it was the smallest in the shoal.

Mine can do the screw in quiver as well, I think the model is pmxs 119av. I actually don't think the quiver tip is original Daiwa design, but it is there when I bought it.

Two things I regret is I didn't fish the B Avon when I lived in Bristol, and didn't fish the Wye when I lived in Walse.

I love trotting for roach, the biggest one I caught is 2lb from Thames, but the big roach is rare in all rivers now I think,

I also have that Daiwa, but have tried to fit a suitable screw in quiver but just look terrible. There are big Roach in gravel pits where they gobble up carp bait, but as you say not so in Rivers.
Wont stop us trying though.
 
I would love to have been fishing the BA when the big fish shoals were intact around Malmsbury. A use a variety of rods for my winter roach and chub fishing: a Fox specialist 0.75 (or is it 0.5lb tc - never really sure); Drennan Im8 bomb rod when I can get away with it and I have a Daiwa power mesh 1.25 that I occasionally use with a Speedia for a change. All brilliant rods in their way just need to luck onto a huge roach now and hope my hands are soft enough to land it. It’s good to dream!
 
I use a combination of a greys pb 1lb test curve twin tip, which comes with a quivertip section ( I've managed barbs over 11lb on it) and a harrison 4 piece 1.5tc avon with a modified tip section that has a 3oz quivertip.
Either are great options

That’s interesting about the 4 piece Avon as I was told by Steve Harrison the sections were too short to splice with quiver tips.
Is this something you had a builder do for you?

I was told the same by many and I've found a great solution....
It cost me a bit in experimenting though!

Those RD a Fox rods are nice, have a couple of Barbel Plus twin tips, the quiver top is a nice quite sensitive tool. Good for feeders and leads to 2 ounces or so.

I bought a series of second hand feeder rods and experimented with cutting down the top section to a point where it would fit as a replacement to the 4th section of the harrison 4 piece.

Of course, you can make any of them fit, but most don't really match the original action of the rod....

Middy make a 'bombproof' 9ft feeder rod...
This when cut in the right position fits really nicely and compliments the current action (imo).
Now of course it depends on the current configuration of your rod as to how it looks and where the eyes are placed etc. But it IS doable for the price of around £30.

In the closed season, I'll send the top section into a pro and get it re-ringed and painted white, but for now it's working nicely.

(You do have to re-enforce around the point where the new section is cut by whipping and epoxying to ensure it doesn't split)

Ah I see now. You’ve added/made a complete new top section to the rod from another rod! Ok I totally get it now.
When I enquired about it to Harrison I was asking about having the original top section spliced with a long quivertip which is what Steve told me can’t be done on that rod.

Nice job btw. Good thinking.
