Advice needed on rods

Danny Watt

Senior Member
Hello, I am wanting to purchase a pair of new rods for casting heavy leads around 8oz. I am wondering if any of you have used any of the following rods, and would be able to give me feedback on which of them would be best suited for casting: Torrix 3lb, Chimera 3lb or the new Acurix 3lb. I would appreciate your feedback. I already own the 2.5 TC Torrix's but sometimes I feel under gunned casting heavy leads with them.
Thank you Danny

The fox 15ft extreme barbel are well capable of that mate not sure what river your fishing though mate and they are pretty expensive aswel £160 ish mate

That's some weight 8 ounces Danny, I live by the Lower Severn and I guess some would need that if not more to hold bottom in a flood, if not more, but I am intrigued as to what Rivers you fish? Can't really suggest any suitable rods though as my 1.75's hardly ever see any action :) Personally I consider anything over 4 ounces as a burden, but like I say I would like to learn more.

If you're serious about casting 8oz ( as opposed to an underarm lob ) may I suggest a beachcaster and don't forget the 80lb shock leader you'll need for that weight.

I fish mainly the Tees, Trent and the Swale. I will only be using them for 8 to 10 foot floods, and I will also be using them for Pike fishing, chucking full mackerel to the far banks. thanks

I'm not particularly averse to chucking pretty big weights around when required. However, if it takes eight ounces, I'm either fishing closer in or off to find Noah and his ark.;):D

P.S. if you aren't already, try braid as a mainline. You can shave an ounce or two off what is required to hold bottom by using it.

Peregrine Specialist Floodwater Barbel
Rod Mk II - 11'9" 2 Piece

This rod is as specialized as they get, for Big River Floods, and has no test curve figure. The rod has been further developed and supersedes the original, which itself was an exciting new development in rod technology.

This rod has a soft but very sensitive tip, the thinking behind a softer tip is that it allows debris to build up on the line without the lead being dragged out of position. The rest of the rod has enough power to cast 8 ounces.

£195 (+£12 p&p - 24 hour delivery)

Here's a review of the Peregrine Flood (Mk.I) Rod on Barbel Fishing World and another on the DVSG webiste.

Hi Danny

I fish the same rivers in the same conditions and have looked into this in great depth. The 2.5 torrix is really a carp blank and not really suitable for throwing much more than the 1.75s I have. Your only choices that I know of for genuine 8oz ability is the Tunley 3lb flood, the peregrine flood and the Fox 2.75s. I have decided to limit myself to 6oz and get rods to suit as the occasions for genuine 8oz are few and far between.

Regards

Stephen

Ps or get a dead bait rod instead but you'll lose the sensitivity in the tip.

I use a pair of Chimera 3lbs tc for my piking and they will chuck half a mackrel and a 2 ounce weight no bother.
When fishing the Thames and Trent in floodish conditions I have been known to use a 4/5 oz feeder and most likely that will go up to 6/7 oz when full. I use a chimera 3 2.25 tc for this and they handle them no bother, that said I have also chucked these feeders with a 1.75 tc rod without too much of a problem......

Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge can help me out here am I doing something g wrong, when I got to the Trent (mainly tidal) I struggle to hold on 5,6oz feeders that in summer conditions at that?

Is the correct answer. I've cast 8oz feeders to a far bank feature with extra water on without any problems with these rods. There is tremendous power in their blanks. Unfortunately i sold them because i needed to use them so rarely.

There are still a number of occasions when weights of 6oz and more are required on the Trent, even using braid and letting a bow out. However, my 2.5tc torrix can handle all but the most extreme ones beautifully.

The above rods are great big river rods apart from my own custom 13 foot rods the either one of the fox2.75s are up to the job. The torrix is a great players rod one of the best but lacks in the butt section for anything over six ounce, that's chucking not lobbing. Then again if you.are using 8ounce plus you don't want to be chucking too far.
A happy medium and one to look at is the Wychwood 13foot maximiser one of the best off the shelf big river rods i have seen. One last bit of advice try before you buy and if that means putting a reel on and a 8 ounce weight, then do it!! I drove 60 miles to check out my customs and they are the only rods
i haven't replaced.

Good luck

Jon

A certain Johnnybarb recommends the Pergrine Flood rod Mr. Watt. Also wondering if you are joining our little gathering next Friday night? The aforementioned gent has the details if you drop him a text.

I think the Peregrine flood is based on a Harrison Ballista blank Jim. Very nice rod a mate of mine has a pair.

I got a fox fx specimen the other week Danny. It feels comfortable with 8ounce on.Good quality guides of the right size and in the right place. All for under 100 notes.
If I can make it when you look at the river with Dave.I'll bring it along for you to have a play with.
