5000 GTE-C v XTEA v 4000 XTRA v D

Ian I noticed some slapstick bidding on two XTEA's that was one of them, this is the other.

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Problem is once you ask a question on a forum such as this one, a few jump all over ebay and the price goes up and the average was around £95 £100 inc of postage.

I called Erics angling the other day and I asked if they had any in stock they replied what's going on I have had 4 calls today on the 5000 XTEA.

I managed to source new XTEA from a tackle shop for £110 delivered...not bad, but I can't be bothered with ebay when it goes like that and puts a few quid in the till for the owner, cheers all for the advice.

I have two of the former XTEA 5000 , had them for three years, they get the Wye treatment several times a year, quality, reliable and well made, not sure this years offerings are in the same ball park, track them down on line , you won't be disappointed.

Blooming Heck. XTEA.

I bought 8 altogether. 2 each for 3 pals who are not so internet savvy and the two for myself. All as new or new. Never paid more than £72!

If only.........there would be 10 in the tackle shed waiting.....

It would seem I jumped on the XTEA a bit late......It was a traet to myself so value of the reel outweighed the cost, I was aware some places cleared them for around £75.00, however there is few left in the 5000 and the 6000 can be found for £120 in some places as clearance or you can go to Brentwood angling and buy one on the below.

SHIMANO SUPER BAITRUNNER XTE

Mind you it is a fantastic reel and Iam very pleased with it.

Graham now that would be nice 10 x £130.00

Ben was that on ebay?

Adam. Yes it would.

Still just in case any problems - just managed to haggle a new one down to £115 incl postage (was £124.95) from..............but last one I'm afraid!! .

If they are so good, AND there's a demand, why have they been discontinued?

Because that's what most of the brands do. They introduce something and produce it for a few years. Then they titivate it a little, change the colour scheme and the name slightly and bung a few extra quid on the price. Sometimes it really is an improvement, sometimes it's not. In the case of the 5000 sized rear drag baitrunners, I'd guess that Shimano decided that, with the introduction of the mini-baitrunners, the demand was no longer there/there was crossover that would affect sales. As the 5000 sized baitrunners have smaller bodies than the 6000 and larger, it would involve greater costs to keep them going, hence the disappearance of the 5000 size from the ranges. The current demand seems to be coming from barbel anglers that have decided that 5000s are the perfect size and the realization that they are no longer. From what I've seen, the updated XTRRA is just as good as the XTEA, it's just not available in the 5000 size.

Precisely why I'm sitting on a pair of very lightly used GTECs, despite the fact that they've been replaced with far superior 4000Ds.;):D

Chris I think there is a demand for any 5000 size Shimano's baitrunners as at this moment and time there is not any in the current range.

I have one more GTE-C for sale in excellent condition with 3 spools £100.00 ;)

As it has a bag, I'll guess that it must be a relatively recent version (GTMRA, GTMRB, GTMRC etc) rather that one of the original Japanese GTMs or Xs. They have a nasty habit of going for quite a bit more than £60 on ebay but the prices do vary quite a bit. £60 for one of the newer versions is reasonable, without being an absolute steal, unless it's had a hard life.

If it turns out to be one of the more expensive front drag versions, then it is a bit of a bargain.

Just taken delivery of it (GTMRB) and it is in mint condition, and very well made too, and smooth as silk, only thing it looks so bling .

Hat's off Chris you know your stuff :)

I really should get out more!;):D
God knows how they have managed to make the original all white reels even more bling with the latest incarnations!:D

Gte c

Hi
I managed to shop around last year and got 4 new GTE C's, 2 of which are still boxed, so I'am open to offers, who knows it might pay for my family holiday!;)

Reels

We don't half get bogged down in minutiae. As long as the reel is of decent quality it will do the job. Apart from interest, does is really matter whether is is a GTE, C,B XTRA, XTEA, 220GTi, of course it doesn't. As usual the labels are to catch anglers. Same with baits, how many of us have a shed load of the next must have wonder bait which proved to be as useless as its predecessor. Rods just the same. We just don't seem to learn that only a few items of basic good quality tackle are required. I just don't understand it. I'm not preaching, as I am as bad or worse than most. I think that I've weaned myself off baits and pretty well on the way with reels. Next goal, get off the rods and tobacco, I suspect that tobacco might be the easier one.

It matters if you think you are buying a reel that's a year or two old and it turns out to be the best part of twenty years old. Eminently possible if you buy a "Stradic" rear drag reel and don't know the exact model.

On the topic of XTEAs, my understanding was that the Shimano XTEA 10000was brought out in a rush to compete with a reel from a competitor (probably Diawa, can't remember). I believe that the XTEA was little more than a tarted up version of the XTE.
Chris will probably know, but I wonder if the 5000 is just a smaller spool version of the 10000?
I can certainly remember XTEA5000s going for around the £60/70 mark about a year ago. Give it a while and their value will drop back again, when the next "must have" reel appears. Does anyone on BFW use Daiwa reels? I don't understand the preoccupation with Shimano.
