11' Barbel Rod

Senior Member
I'm looking for an 11' rod, 1.75lb (ish) t.c. for use with 10-12lb lines 1.5-3oz leads - big fish. Looking around at what is available off the shelf I can only find the Fox Duo Lite FX that looks half decent. Are there any others currently available? I'm in no great rush to buy as I won't be on the water I have in mind until next season. Any others no longer in production that I should watch out for on the 2nd hand market? Anyone got a Harrison Avon SU? What kind of leads can that handle? Your recommendations always appreciated chaps . . .

I've had a fox duo twin tip in 11 foot that had a 1.75 and 2.25 top that was a lovely rod and also have a torrix 11 foot 1.75 which is also stunning.

Andy, i know your not too far from Liverpool, throw a tenners worth of petrol in the car and pay Harrisons a visit at Liverpool Docks. He,ll full fill your every need. And as your not going to need it till next year, you,ll have plenty of time to save up. :)

Give Dave Lumb or Andy Sliwa a call, both make excellent rods at very reasonable prices and i am sure they will be able too sort something out for you mate

I would have thought you would be making your own mate, I would if I was you, get a torrix blank and build it to exactly what you want. No one else will have one like it;)

That's the general idea mate but looking for something a bit cheaper than the Torrix as it won't be used that often.

Andrew, try looking at a harrison triptych, 11ft about 13/4 tc and is a 3 piece rod so packs into the car boot out of sight:)

Nice one John, didn't realise they did an 11' version as it's not on their blank lists but then that's nothing unusual for Harrison!

Off the top of my head:
11 footers:
GTI 1.75
GTI 2.0
Torrix 1.5
Torrix 1.75
Torrix 2.0
Avon 1lb 6 ounce
Avon SU 1.75
Avon 1.5 (4 piece)
Quorum approx. 1.5 with 2 butts to make 11 and 12
Probably one or two I've forgot.
Made all of the above.

Torrix 1.75 is a very nice rod - use one myself

Not sure where you reside, but consider Kevin Baines (Anglers Workshop, Newcastle-Under-Lyme), his 1.5lb TC, 11 FT Specialist Number 1, is an awesome rod. Nice soft tip and all the power reserves that you need lower down (its his own Harrison blank too).

Use it for most of my Barbel fishing on small to medium sized rivers (Dane, Dove and Upper Severn). A mate has also used one to land some cracking Barbel from the Hampshire Avon.

Try Chas Burns at Burns built rods York . Top notch rod maker using Harrison blanks . The 11ft SU Avon 1.75 lb TC is a lovely rod

Free spirit Barbel tamer 11 ft well worth seeking out, although only 1.5lb test have lots of reserve power in the butt.

Andy - I should add that both the doubles I've caught so far this season (from half a dozen sessions) have been snaffled using the 11" North Western you refurbished for me. Brilliant rod and plenty of power. I'm not selling it, however. :)

Nice one Rich - been trying to get hold of one the same since I had a play with yours! A pair came up on the bay recently but went for silly money. Don't sell it!

No chance of that! It works beautifully with a 'pin, having a softer action than my pair of Normarks (and you're not having a play with them). :)

I can also recommend this rod, handles the bigger fish with ease.

Slim, light, powerful, good build quality and a great action.....No, not the perfect woman but a Peregrine GTI 11 ft. Super rod.
