Hi Ben,
Yes am also aware of this EA response in the past, but not too sure whether this is still the case as per now? There are clearly some exceptional circumstances (I.e. fish kill etc…that would allow barbel restocking into a non- indigenous river, but as you say how does that sit with...
Hi All,
I’m after some info that some of you good guys may be able to provide.
Does anyone know whether any of our southern rivers hold barbel that were indigenous? Any advice/help gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Ian
Well said Darrel and I totally agree with you.
How anyone can honestly say that a fish that hasn’t been caught for a couple of years has either “passed on” or
“is safe to assume it’s gone” is surely a bit blinkered in their thought process? It’s a well known fact that barbel can and do travel...
Can only comment on the ledgering option - if your going to use and abuse then look no further than the good old Rapidex, I’ve been using my two now for nearly 40 years, brilliant reels with a lovely ratchet. You can pick a second hand one up for around £35 - £40 and they’ll never let you down😀...
Clive,
I suppose I’m one of those “head-bangers”. Have been fishing my “local” Sussex Rother for a number of years now as it’s only a 20-25 min drive from my home. The river has an extremely low stock of barbel and has been getting progressively harder in recent years - if I say I made 40 trips...
Taste F2 - not for me, used it throughout last Season on a number of occasions but no barbel. IMO not in the same class as the JB frost & flood base mix but unfortunately he’s not making this mix anymore😩
Everyone has their own view/opinion quite rightly as to what centrepin they prefer - as one of those “old handlers” 😂😂. I’ve used the same Rapidex reels for the best part of 40 years now (ledgering), they’re still going strong and have coped with barbel in excess of 16lb+. A truly fantastic reel...
Not too much I can add here (as a fellow Rother angler). Yes it’s an incredibly difficult river to fish for barbel and you may well go through a hell of a lot of blanks ( and I do mean a lot) before connecting with one, but the rewards are there. 🤫😄
Sad news but totally understand Paul.
Todays barbel fishing is nothing like you and I experienced on that lovely Kennet stretch at Rainsford Farm all those years ago before the otters moved in. Good times mate but sadly never to be repeated. Keep well Paul and all the very best.
Ian
Can’t go wrong with a Rapidex - have used them for 40 years in my barbel fishing (I ledger only), quality pin that has easily coped with barbel in excess of 16lb. Highly recommend this pin.
