Bird nesting season is probably 1st April onward, earlier if the weather has been mild - a lot of vegetation clearance will be done at end-March to beat the cut-off. We certainly will do it as a preventative measure at work if we think there is a chance of needing to do other construction work...

Any of you Kennet chaps go to Reading Angling Centre - is it still there? Spent a lot of time and money in there when I lived in Reading - excellent bait and tackle, and a good crack too. Rob used to bag you up maggots in the bait room, which a lot of places won't do now.

Paul - water temps will lag a bit behind air temps, and so you might catch the tail end of warmer water depending on how soon you fish after the temps take a downward turn. High with colour would say Barbel to me - low clear and cold then maybe not. Only Barbel would drag me out at the moment -...

Joe - I've only ever used Milk Protein base mixes combined with a fishmeal base mix in varying proportions. Rolls out fine with standard oils/flavours. Haven't ever done a pure HNVMP mix though I'm afraid - certainly a much finer base. Doesn't the egg white and/or yolk do the binding/hardening bit?
