    Ticket price increase.

A club I was a member of, one that I didn't leave because of the cost, charges £143 for full membership and £113 for pensioners. I don't think £100 is unreasonable if they have some good waters to fish. A season ticket for the top 4 charging Premiership football clubs is over £1,000 per year...

Don't forget to fish the margins 🤣🤣

    Memberships.

The most I had was three but I was down to one last year and may not renew. Like Phil my mojo has gone.

End of an era, for me

Paul, I have also given up barbel fishing but mine was a more gradual thing, enjoying catching largish tench and bream in the daylight (yes I know  ) instead. I have hardly fished at all in the last two years and that was more because I have "lost my mojo" than due to the pandemic. Maybe...

    How much longer ????

Not much use for me fishing the Loddon but if I were fishing the Trent in flood conditions I might find it very useful indeed.

Shimano Bantam Reel Oil ? alternatives ?

I don't know if it is the same spec but Penn and Abu Garcia sell reel oil. Personally, I have always used a light bicycle oil. Never WD40 or 3in1.

    Tackle Insurance

Thanks guys, when I spoke to my insurance company some time ago they were pretty vague but I will email them so I have something in writing.

    Tackle Insurance

Terry, as far as I can see Korda stopped selling tackle insurance, although you can find there adverts from 2014! There are a number of companies that do tackle insurance, I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience before I go with any particular company.

    Tackle Insurance

I have never taken out tackle insurance before but there have been a number of thefts from sheds and garages a few miles away where sporting equipment has been taken. I would have relied on my household insurance if something was stolen, but the policy just states shed and garage contents...

Some good news re storm. Overflows of sewerage

It is good news but the plan won't be in place for 18 months then it will be a further 3 years for 800 overflows to be "improved". Whilst welcoming this I suspect that 800 is "a drop in the ocean". There is no mention of storm drains themselves only sewerage discharge. I suspect that water...

    Unwritten rule

The swim he chooses may be his favourite swim, he may have been baiting it for weeks etc. If we don't know we should be more tolerant. What I don't like is after I have set up on a small stream another person (I won't call them an angler), sets up in the next swim and proceeds to cast his heavy...

    Club Memberships...how many?

3, but I plan to make it only one next year, and that won't be any of the ones I am currently in!

    Anglers mail article

Chris, I don't disagree that Pete Reading's method catches barbel (in the right place at the right time). I will also concede that, compared with other activities £15 (or £20) isn't overly expensive. It maybe just that my boredom level is low and I wouldn't be able to wait for eight hours before...

    Anglers mail article

Alex, unfortunately the stream where I fish has a small population of barbel and is heavily fished. The water is also never "chalk stream" clear so I have never seen a barbel unless it has been at the end of a fishing line. The upside is, if you are fortunate enough, you are more likely to catch...

    Anglers mail article

Just to be clear, I have nothing against the Bait and Wait and Wait approach and it is probably very effective in the right place. I would also think that sitting for 8 hours with no bait in the water in the daytime is better than sitting behind your beta lights in the dark for 8 hours with no...

    Anglers mail article

It was interesting to read that he uses 4 pints of maggots or casters and 4 pints of hemp. Swimfeeds it into a small area and waits for 4 hours until he sees a barbel fin and then another 4 until he introduces his bait! I know barbel anglers are supposed to have deep pockets and infinite...

    Hooklength/ Hair- rig storage

Enterprise sell adjuster stops. Using these you can use short hook links but keep your weight well away from the hook. This means that you can use quite short flat rig boxes and there will be no curl or bends in your hook lengths.

    Rod storage

Like John suggests, I had my wife sew loops onto the ends of the rod bags. I have screws along one side of my garage and hang the bags on them. As I don't use the garage for parking the car (who does ?) and do little DIY in it, the rods are fairly safe. Also, as I store unused bait and nets...

    National team funding

It is not something I am in favour of either but, maybe, there could be an option to make a voluntary contribution when one renews their licence? For instance, if you renew online as I do, there could be a box you could tick if you wanted to contribute say £2.

    Are you a Backwinder or a Drag-artist?

I set my clutches so there is just a bit of resistance when the fish takes the bait and then the other setting as a safety if the fish lunges when I a playing it. I then play the fish using back winding if the fish is pulling strongly and not near any hazards. I do suppose I would use the drag...
