Simon,
I have very little time to fish these days since children 4 & 5 came along. So I simply don't have the time to put in to an extensive barbel campaign. I'm lucky in that the Yorkshire Ouse is only 5 mins way so I can pop down at dusk for a 2-3 hour session, but I can't really justify...
Oh I do Paul, I do. I've had my moment of enlightenment.
I returned to angling 4 years ago after a long break (mad keen in my youth, but moved on to other things). I spent the first couple of seasons driven by the thought of big barbel. Then I caught one; 11lb 10oz - big for the Yorkshire...
Guys,
Chris Jones recently posted a link to the EA River Level site in the River Swale thread.
I had no idea that this resource was available so I thought I'd post it here on the assumption that many others many also not be aware of it...
David G,
Re-write that post without the sarcasm and condescension and I would probably say that you have summed up my thoughts on the issue very accurately.

Dan,
Out of interest, what year are your '54s? Both myself and Mike have very early ones that have different handle connections than the later models. The threads have gone and we've not been able to find replacement handles.

I agree that they're rather heavy for stalking on small streams, but I find them just fine on the Ouse, for example.
For my lighter rods I've got one of those Shimano mini-baitrunners which I find rather nice.

I have used a variety of Shimanos (GTE-5000B, 5000 XTEA, various other cheaper models) and also have a couple of Cardinal 54s and a 55.
If it weren't for the baitrunner facility, I'd be more than happy using a 54 over any of the Shimanos - the clutch is better than any of them, except possibly...
Barbel are not hard to catch, if you can find them.
They will not be put off by a smear of sun cream.
Sometimes you guys just seem to make things unnecessarily hard!

OK, fair comment about the font.
How about black text and 10% grey background for the colours? Maybe a slightly increased line spacing would help too?
