Not our Barbus, so strictly I should post this on the other species board but seeing as it's close season I figured no one would mind too much.
Sam Wadman has written a cracking article about his trip to Iran chasing the King barbel it's available online on the link below, starts a page 80...

Dear Tom,
I'm enthused that other big river barbel...
Digging a hole is the way to go, move as far away from the river as is practical. Smaller trowels are available than the one linked to earlier. I use one of these when backpacking, it doesn't collapse very well but it's compact in any case.

It's not an easy choice at all, I think I might have to vote perch. Memories of a monster that I caught when I was about 7. It must have been about 1/2lb but to me it was enormous.

Whilst googling around for more info on pre-baiting, I stumbled across this gem from back in the day. I wonder how much more great info is lurking in the archives.

Luke, I'm planning something very similar on my bit of the Trent in the run up to the new season. I had a go with similar tactics in Feb/March, I only managed a couple of chub but conditions were challenging and it seemed like I had flu for most of the time so fished very little.
Just thought I'd report back on this, I only managed a short session before the rain hit and the levels went a bit crazy, result was one plump and frequently air born chub. So not what I had hoped for but quite entertaining non the less. The river is dropping now but so are the temps so I think...
I'm between willington and shardlow. I had a quick session yesterday without any success. I'm going to keep at it I think, albeit with less bait as temps now seem to be dropping. My logic is that I'm not really trying to introduce a new wonder bait to very cautious frequently captured fish, I'm...
Thanks for the comments, it's definitely food for thought. I think you would normally be right Mike but it's still quite warm at the moment so I'm hoping they are still feeding. The Trent is a big old river so I'm hoping that I haven't over done it. I started with a hand full of boilies and...
Hi all,
I am looking for a little advice on pre-baiting, I've just moved house and am now very close to a stretch of the upper Trent and I'm thinking of doing a little prebaiting to hopefully improve my chances. My questions are:
Bait - boilies, pellets or a mix of both
Quantity - how...
If you do go and are struggling to get out, the trick is not to panic, floating is not too difficult even in heavy clothing and it's usually not too far to an easier get out or maybe some shallows
