I'm not saying it doesn't happen Steve, though in this neck of the woods, while the carp obviously spawn, recruitment levels are usually so low as to effectively be non-existent. Certainly this is the case in all the pits and larger lakes I know throughout the Southeast, and while I guess there...
Really you can't use carp in any argument for or against the closed season as King carp rarely if ever successfully spawn in the UK and wild carp are already virtually extinct due to the impact of king carp.
Damian, Unless Natural England were to modify their stance on the closed season, I don't think they would allow fishing on any water be it stillwater or river within the boundaries of a SSSI site. Certainly there was a big issue with closed season fishing being banned on a muddy pool commercial...
Thanks Rich. I've just been asked to do a bit on Talk Sport with Nigel Botherway at 7.30 on Sunday morning so if any insomniacs out there who aren't fishing want to tune in, I'll do my best to entertain them.
It feels like it has taken me a lifetime to put it together but finally I have a new book finished and at the printers in preparation for publication next month. Entitled 'Reflections - Highlights From An Angling Life' the book is pretty much what it says on the cover, being a collection of...
Mike, I don't think I'd be capable of wearing varifocals without constantly falling down stairs, tripping over pavements and accidentally walking into rivers.
The trouble is, that since I had to start wearing spectacles, every fish I catch looks bigger than it actually is. And, this is especially true when I have to put my reading specs on to read the scales.
Craig, there's no law saying that you can't throw some bait in at this time of the year and I'm sure the fish would love you for it.
wink and smile face.
In a little island as overpopulated and relentlessly pressurised as this, giving everyone unlimited full-time access to everything can only result in everything becoming just that little bit more mashed up than it already is and, let's face it, the ecology of England is already falling to bits...
One of the last times I had an run in with someone fishing a river out of season I later found out he was a copper who knew exactly what he was doing. Not only was he fishing out of season, he was also catching pike to illegally transfer them.
Dave, sorry but I can't reconcile in my mind how you can go river carping in May unless you abolish or ignore the closed season. I'm not having a go, mate. I just haven't got my head around what you're saying... but mine was only a throw away comment anyway.
Cheers, C.
