    Invasive species,Prussian carp

For an Island nation so close at heart to others like New Zealand or Australia we seem to learn very little from them.

I usually watch The Ginger Fisherman, light and fun. Mark E’s stuff is also a good watch.

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

I think it’s worth pointing out, I honestly do not believe the fish feels the hook penetrate, think about tench that pick up a bait and sit there, we’ve all had it. I’ve picked up a motionless rod on numerous occasions to find a Chub hooked. The nerves aren’t there to do that, a fishes mount and...

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

I’d really like to “get into” free lining and trundling. With that in mind I picked up a 1.25tc rod that will hopefully allow to get on with it next summer. I’ve done a bit of free lining log worms for Chub but it’s very limited in its application.

Interesting old catalogue page from 1978

Because I’m an odd individual I spent a few minutes. A £70 rod an reel combo in 1972, would be the equivalent of spending £1072 today. The average house price in 1970 was about £4K, or £60k. Average house price in 2021, 270k…

I would say your being done. Is the bait hook or hair mounted?

    Pier rod I can see.

    Split Cane rods

I’d found that before but it’s of pretty slight proportions for a sea rod, I certainly wouldn’t want to throw 3 or 4oz leads on it.

    Split Cane rods

In my collection of bits is this, it’s marked up as an Allcocks Climax and supplied by Keanes of Plumbstead. That’s all I really know about it. Searches around it when I first got it drew a blank, it doesn’t seem to fit the bill of what they had. It’s just over 11ft, appears to have a spliced...

    Garlands Mad Dog fishing clothing?

As long as they are prepared to ship to you I wouldn’t let import put you off. US customer service is usually bang on and many of them are quite well rehearsed at shipping to the U.K.

    Perch

I think I probably will concede and buy something like that. Thanks Bill. The initial idea behind not weighing was to prevent me getting too fixated. I wanted to keep that child like joy of catching fish that can get lost. If you’ve ever caught a fish, say a Barbel, weighed it and found its...

    The state of our rivers

Sort of David. As the letter above explains, it had not become law, they were still in the process of hashing it out. Basically they bowed to public pressure and listened to the amendments made to the law to pass it by the lords. In short, it didn’t pass quality control, upset customers and had...

    Perch

A few years ago I took up lure fishing, I find it great fun and to keep that sporting fun side to it I made the decision to not weigh what I caught. Couple of weeks ago I regretted this choice with a beautiful Hampshire Avon Perch. I couldn’t resist and took a rudimentary measurement of 45cm.

Start now, the warmer the water the more likely they are to chase down a lure or jig.

    The state of our rivers

Thinking positively, this issue we’ve been banging on about for years and has gone unresolved for decades, by a mostly indifferent public has finally gone mainstream in a big way. People that would normally switch off when I start ranting a bit on the subject are now telling me about it (shows...

    The state of our rivers

It’s not over yet, this will bounce back and forth a bit yet. The government won’t take the amendments from the lords at first hit, it’s billy bluster stuff. It’s a massive bill and the bit concerned here is only a fraction of it. Bit of pantomime, public and media backlash and some of the...
