    Talk about peaking too early.

I took my five year old fish last summer for the first time, we had a cracking morning catching roach and small to hand Carp. The initial fear passed and she became curious and even caught one 90% of her own work. We did the usual, sweets and she sat in daddies special chair. As we drove home we...

    Spinning Rod

20-60g? If so, no. That kind of weight it ideal for medium hard and soft lures, 3-5” “baits” typically. A good weight for Piking. For drop shot, you’d be looking for a top end casting weight of 20g, preferably half that. I’d really encourage you to aim at small jigs and spinners in the 5-15g...

    Spinning Rod

It’s all personal preference and they mostly are abbreviated handles. You are going to be holding the rod and casting constantly and you will be feeling for tiny dinks at times. Personally I like a short rod as it makes moving around easier and in my opinion moving around to find the fish is...

"Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing" New Series

You see it here, not in the big towns but the small towns and villages the butchers tend to sell all kinds of Game meats. I noticed it was very common in Spain.

"Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing" New Series

I’ve driven past the Ex many times and never knew it’s was such a lovely river. It’s nice light watching, the kind of thing I chuck on if I think I might nod off :D

How did your Barbel journey start ?

I’ve always been fascinated by fish, even now so see a fish I’ve only ever seen in a book is exciting, fish keeping is the same. I assume most anglers can understand that. A few years ago I was Snorkelling in the Caribbean, I was much more excited to see wild Caribbean Blue Tangs and French...

    Is this pollution

Looks like organic film, was this below some riffles or an area of high surface agitation by any a chance? Basically the excess air sticks to organics and they in turn stick to other organics and it creates a slime or foam. You see the same on the beach sometimes. Where the organic material...

    Age or discrimination

I take your point. Some people do enjoy the “wild” style though. If you were informed before you purchased the ticket that there were access issues, I don’t think the use of the word discrimination is appropriate, it’s a pretty firm word. I sympathise with your point and I know I will get there...

    How wolves saved Yellowstone .

Haven’t watched it yet but it’s quite interesting for the Americans directly fund from The Department of Hunting and Fisheries. I was listening to something a while back it was said that without the investment back into wildlife by the department there wouldn’t be any. We could possibly learn a...

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

You also want to believe that if a pick up does come your as likely as possible to connect to that fish. If I think I can get an extra 20% I’m going to take it.

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

Possibly because the barbel market segment is a bit nieche, whereas Carp makes a huge market share of angling.

How has that rig faired for you?

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

I think a lot of this comes down to doesn’t look or feel right as a free offering. Free line a bait and it’s often nailed. It’s also worth noting that pulls could be from anything, there’s some clonking Dave on the Avon that bang away on the pellet.

    Fishing and work.

The simple answer is what you feel comfortable with. I fish the same way, I go out after the bedtime routine. I’ve had a fair few occasions where I’m getting back up for work after 3 hours sleep. If you feel your too tired though that’s up to you to decide. Lots of people survive only 4/5 hours...

    Deformed barbel

I’ve heard loads of reasons but nothing conclusive. Personally I think it’s just something that happens to the spine, through damage. Spawning etc can be rough.
