Fishing and work.

What time do you all fish to in the week assuming you've got to go to work the next day ?? I'm 30-40 minutes from the Trent and normally fish till 11pm then pack up and drive home. By the time I'm cleaned up and in bed (but not asleep) it's 12:30 ish. Back up at 6am.

Work has been physically hard this week, and knowing the fishing is going to be tough and I'm going to be tired afterwards, I haven't bothered to go.

Simon, you are so lucky to live near a great river and even have the option. Any barbel fishing trip for me is at minimum an overnight stay somewhere so go fishing, feel tired but enjoy !!

First season in years that work, combined with low and hot conditions, has kept me off the bank since June
Worst thing is I’ve lost my mojo and got in the habit of not going !!
So big effort tomorrow for an overnighter and hopefully I’m hooked again
In summer I’ll fish to about 10-11 then 45 minute drive home , so about the same as you Simon
Its tiring but summers don’t last too long and the energy to do it is also ebbing away every year so I should make the effort but I won’t go after barbel in 2’ of tepid water no matter what
As an aside fished the Ebro a fortnight ago and it was 28 degC water temp!!!
Needless to say the cats weren’t having it

The simple answer is what you feel comfortable with. I fish the same way, I go out after the bedtime routine. I’ve had a fair few occasions where I’m getting back up for work after 3 hours sleep. If you feel your too tired though that’s up to you to decide. Lots of people survive only 4/5 hours sleep most days.

Works the opposite for me, unless we are away and say I am fishing the Wye , its a case of in bed by probably 11pm which is early for me, up at 3.am and on the bank fishing for 5 am . Early sessions are my favoured approach although I used to fish till about midnight regularly when I was fishing the Ribble.
I have not not fished a river now since June as my “ local” river about 40 miles away is way too low , and even if it was ok the club rule is to be off the bank by 10.00 pm.

I've been retired for quite a few years now and have never understood those people that say they're dreading it as will have nothing to do. Provided you're lucky to have health/mobility retirement allows you to pursue those activities you just couldn't fit in when working.
My "local" river, the Wensum, only has about 4 barbel in it (if that) so my barbel fishing always entails a bit of a drive. That's difficult now due to costs and river conditions. However, I am lucky enough to have a section of the Upper Bure nearby and spend many happy hours there catching dace, roach, chub and the occasional stripey.
I'm just happy to be fishing!

It's a wonderful time of the day to be out isn't it, early doors, almost ethereal!
During the hot weather I found the fish much more willing to feed, though my catch rate showed otherwise, but I was almost more interested in just enjoying that moment.

My last work trip involved 26 days x 12 hours plus travelling. That takes its toll, so I will go when I feel up to it. I won't bust a gut, it's not life or death, it's meant to be an enjoyable pastime. I won't fish for barbel in hot conditions, so this has resulted in just three sessions since the season start. I will travel, so I arrive maybe mid morning, and fish until about 11 pm or overnight. 12-18 hours because of the distance travelled.

I live an hour away from my syndicate stretch so i fish an hour after sunset then have an hours drive home so in the height of summer I get back home about midnight gets earlier as the season goes on but it’s 2 hours into dark in the winter

It's Friday or Saturday night for me, Simon, so I can fish overnight and drive the 1h 30mins home, from the Upper Trent or Dove, in the morning. If I can only get out Sunday I'll try and arrive early afternoon and fish til 9pm. The latter's not great in summer and I never see dusk.

It's all very hard work just to blank! Still got the mojo - but can feel it slipping away.

Every time I read a report concerning drought, river levels, pollution, negligent water companies my enthusiasm wanes just a little more.
