When i wanted a new one recently and looked at a number of well known fishing brands but was not particularly impressed. Went in the end for Mil-Tec one. They used to advertise on here i think and I think I bought the small assault pack which suited what I wanted for roaming. Plenty of loops...
Her but! I am in the lucky position of having a reasonable canal reservoir in walking distance but if pushed may still keep in my district council area by driving down to a local and see if any barbel or chub will cooperate.
Hallelujah! Having just put my fishing gear away, i can now get it out! At least the weather is not really conducive to anything but ice fishing at the moment. Minus 4 outside at the moment with freezing fog.
Ok. So we're locked down again in England. As I heard it, we are still allowed out for exercise so does this mean I can go fishing this time around as long as I'm on my own as is normal for me? Has anyone delved deeper into the small print?
Nobody has mentioned the 503. I bought one new in 1965 (as a poor student i couldn't run to the 505). Has been used for tench fishing and trotting for roach and I still prefer it to the later models, some of which I have. Still in excellent condition and has handled carp up to mid teens.
Get yourself a pair of Sealskinz waterproof socks as well. I frequently wade to just below knee level in mine and they are excellent when in cold water.
A bit longer than a few years ago that it used to run black. As a lad, i used to trot for roach on it and had a number approaching 2lb in a swim behind what is now the sightscreen at the river end of the Glamorgan County Cricket ground in Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Rumours then of the odd...
Craghoppers are excellent and light weight. Mine are not lined although I have some of their waterproof ones which do have s lining but are still fairly lightweight and do keep you dry. Not expensive and no carp tax.
Joe. They don't say in the WUF newsletter - see extract below.
"Most of the human population may be confined to home but nature continues on regardless of course. Spring and early summer are a busy time for lots of river fish, especially coarse species.
While out tackling invasive weeds on...
The Wye and Usk Foundation have posted some interesting videos on U-tube of spawning barbel in the river Wye. Also a separate video of Chubb spawning in much greater numbers.
Couldn't see how to post a link to these but a search under Wye and Usk Foundation should turn these up.
I have an ABU 503 closed face reel with spare spool that i bought back in 1966? To replace an aged Mitchell closed face reel and also bought a cane topped Avon rod to replace my tank aerial rod that caught a lot of roach on the Taff back in the day. The ABU is still in use today and has caught...
For those that are short of cork place mats, wine corks much a very acceptable alternative especially when you have to open a decent bottle to get one. Enjoy!
Forgot to add, make sure that whatever you buy that you try them on for comfort and fit. As one of the short fat hairy leg brigade i find this to be essential.
If you want chest waders, i can recommend Ikon waders. I have had a pair for 4 years and use regularly especially scrambling around small streams on Welsh borders: light and very comfortable to walk and wade in. They wash well with Nikwash products. More recently they have brought out a...
To avoid breakages, i keep all my rods in tubes, whether bagged or not. They take up more room but stop accidental damage. Recently i acquired at auction an umbrella stand which offers 4 rectangular compartments with a metal tray beneath. This is ideal for holding the rod tubes upright in my...
