Wonderful stuff Mark. The crucians in Harris are a bit smaller on average now, but still beautiful fish and a joy to catch. The current approach is a bit more conventional. Its great to catch them on float, but the bites can be tricky to hit so I prefer light method rigs which allows me two...
No day tickets on any Farnham AS waters, just guest tickets from local tackle details in advance at a tenner per rod. Also, the Frensham Ponds are closed during the traditional close season.
You may be right Iain, but what are you going to do with 200 plastic baits? :) I'm still using the same few I bought years ago. Yet to try them for river fish, but great for tench and crucians.
Not sure if this helps Bill, but as your Fareham friend is just an occasional angler, you may want some reasonably prolific tench fishing and Godalming's Marsh Farm is only 45 minutes away. A nice spot with day tickets, plus good facilities including an excellent tackle shop on site.
I've tried various clip-ons over the years including some ridiculously expensive ones, but now much prefer over-glasses. Even the cheaper polarised ones do a better job for me and cutting out sunlight from the sides is a big advantage. Obviously it does depend on not having large frame...
Quite right about LIF Graham, but that will often give you at least two chances of a pound plusser :D I'm with you on the Frome, a wonderful river, and if I lived a nearby I'd probably fish nowhere else for grayling.
£25.50 for a day ticket on the LIF, but you'd only need to buy one to catch what you are after. Dorchester winter ticket a snip at £20 for old codgers like me.
Don't know where you are based Stephen, but a session on the Lower Itchen Fishery would almost certainly give you what you are seeking - quite heavily fished but consistently reliable.
We were there for a day in August when the river was low and clear and actually had more barbel from the top end than from below. That said, you're on the outside of a sweeping bend at the top, so I can understand it being more tricky when there's extra water coming down. You're right about the...
We also fished Fownhope 5 last year. Cardiac hill hard work, so travel light if fishing below the landslip, but plenty of barbel to be caught from the croys at the upstream end nearer the car park.
Chub for me, and grayling when it gets really cold. A couple of years back it was stillwater perch in even the coldest of weather. Think I may go back for some of that.
Thanks for starting this thread Jeff. What a great bunch you all are on this forum. My very best wishes to those of you not enjoying the best of times right now.
