Good thread with some interesting replies.
They are a wonderful fish and a respected adversary that fight all the way to the net.It is always a challenge when you hook into a good barbel,in my opinion an eight pound torpedo in it's river environment is more difficult to land than much bigger...
[QUOTE=Tony Scott
''The others are right, just up the mono, braid is great in certain situations, but have you seen how it slices through any soft tissue it comes against when under strain, imagine what it can do to a fishes mouth in a prolonged battle.''
I can only go on my personal experience...
When I initially started this thread it was about what hooks to use when snag fishing,it has moved on quite a lot now to the ethics of snag fishing which is not what I wanted but it has the blessing of a super moderator(whatever that is):) so here are my thoughts.
I don't subscribe to the...
Hi Tom,
I think I know what you are getting at-that the hooklink should always break before the main line.;)
At first glance it may seem that this terminal tackle is not balanced but although the main line is marketed as 15 lbs bs it actually breaks at higher than that.Synergy is 0.35mm...
This is the rig I have finally decided to use and I guarantee it will stop any barbel in it's tracks. It is a basic but very effective running rig.
Main line is 15lbs suffix synergy, hooklength is 15lbs PB products jellywire coated braid with a couple of inches stripped back above the hook...
I really like Roy Marlow's videos, very clear and easy to follow,I have always used the figure of eight knot in the following video and it has served me well when I occasionally use a quick change swivel...
Thanks to all the members who have replied with constructive replies and suggestions for different hook patterns, they are very much appreciated. If there was a thanks button I would have used it but we don't appear to have one on this forum.
Sadly a few members decided to go completely of...
Darren, there is no way any of us can answer that question,I am sure we have all suffered from the inexplicable hook pulls in the past and none of us know if it has caused any damage to the barbel's mouth.
If you are remotely worried about it then it is perhaps better not to fish for barbel...
It didn't take long for the self appointed barbel morality police to enter the debate with some crass comments did it ?
I am a strong advocate of barbel welfare and would not use this style of fishing if there was even the smallest chance of a fish being damaged in any way.
For your...
I have done quite a bit of fishing near sunken tree roots in the last couple of seasons as there are some big barbel and the odd carp that like the sanctuary around them.
This is hit and hold fishing at it's best and requires immensely strong tackle(and a good heart) as it places extreme...
Just got back from an enjoyable 5 hour session having caught 8 barbel up to 8.10.One of the fish had another hook(trailing some braid and a broken swivel) in it's mouth which I removed.
On closer inspection it looked like about a size 12 Owner C5 that was tied to about 12'' of coated braid...
If I can't make it to the tackle shop then I always use Leslies of Luton. They despatch items quickly and keep you informed about the order status, they also allow paypal now so some added security there.Must have used them around 40 times now and never had a problem.I have also used the Tackle...
These are superb hooks and will stop any barbel that swims-

Very strong, wide gape with an inturned point ideal for fishing over gravel or rocky swims. They are also a bit cheaper than the...
There has been some set lines found on stretches of the middle Trent,E.Europeans being the prime suspects, they will take any fish for the table that manages to hang itself onto the fixed hooks, including barbel.
They tend to mark the lines with things like an old detergent bottle tied to...
Certainly have Sam,and I enjoyed it :) I just about mastered the Wallis cast as well ;)
I am not knocking folks for legering with a pin,far from it-if it works for you and you enjoy that style of fishing then great.
The point I am making is that in my opinion when legering a quality fixed...
I can't really see the point of using a centrepin for legering,a decent fixed spool reel does the job much better imo, although I have met a few old timers who swear by their trusty old centrepin and use it for nearly all of their fishing.
