Mark,
I have not fished the Kennet for a couple of seasons, but the last time I fished near Newbury there was hardly any streamer weed. Is there much left anywhere>
Regards,
Hugo
Years ago when the Kennet was full of streamer weed and crystal clear I used to regularly catch barbel by casting a lump of meat to the densest weed bed and leaving the bait on the surface, this was after dark.
The barbel could be heard slurping like carp and on moonlit nights it was wonderful...
From observing the fish in our tropical freshwater fish tank it is amazing how different species feed at specific levels.
In the morning when I turn on the tank's light all the fish are resting on the gravel but as soon as the flaked food is introduced, they assume their positions.
I put in a...
This is such a difficult choice. I am a friend of Ian Crook, Ian Tucker and Will Barnard and have fished the Loddon, St Pat's and The Kennet.
Years ago I was a member of Twyord and am still a member of CSAS, who have a stretch of the Kennet at Ham Bridge. I toyed with the idea of joining...
In that Barbel Special edition there was a great deal of discussion on the topic of overfeeding with boilies and pellets.
Tony Miles also wrote that he did not see the point in fishing for the same big fish once he had caught it, just to gain yet another p.b. or record, once the poor creature...
I have just been re reading an old copy of Angling Today from January 2007, which was a Barbel Special.
There are several articles on 'The Traveller' and Adams Mill
In another article
Pete Reading wrote
" There is an unfortunate trend towards rods which are too stiff for barbel, often called...
Edward does make really superb rods. I have long owned and treasured a Barbus Maximus II, which is a joy to use. He gives the most wonderful after sales service and I spent a whole morning with him discussing everything under the sun, including Paul Boote, but my lips are sealed.
Great...
I am no expert on black puddings but do enjoy those recommended by Mr Crook, which are readily available in the soft south.
I know a Lancashire lass who sometimes treat us to the black stuff from her home. I must admit they are rather good.
Feeling peckish but have no black puddings...
Being an old curmudgeon who fishes in the style of Chris Yates I tend to fish only short sessions these days and still nearly always hold the rod. I cut my barbel teeth at Penton Hook in the early sixties when the barbel were plentiful but never reached double figures. Mk IV Carp rods were the...
In the days of the old forum when men were men and we were graced by the presence of the barbel gods, there was a very heated River Medway thread, which had to be closed down for a while to cleanse it of the vitriole. Of course in those distant times many hid behind assumed identities and egos...
Surely Damian and Lee could discuss which thread to use on which landing net handle?
BSF or Whitworth or metric? This one could run and run!
I think Crooky should start a " Which Black Pudding ? " thread, or even " Which Pie ? "
;)
Hugo
Yes Crooky I did read it and have saved the thesis.
As to the other nonsense, totally irrelevant to any fishing site and rather tedious in any event.

Hugo
Meanwhile back at the ranch.....
I was already aware of Karen's thesis, which is a splendid piece of work. My thanks to her and BFW for allowing others to share it.

Hugo
