There really is no time when they won't feed, but dusk and the first hour into dark is when I am most optimistic. I have found in many swims, on both small and large rivers, that when the bats are flying then the tip will soon be moving round.
Really missing the riverbank !

Shaun is absolutely right. Our dear barbel are chased, especially on smaller rivers, from pillar to post. Let them enjoy peace for a few months and do what comes naturally!

With the greatest respect I believe that the closed season needs to be maintained. It gives an opportunity for the riverbanks, flora and fauna to recover.
Barbel normally spawn during the close season, does one really want to cast at spawning fish, even if they were interested in our baits...
Following on from the "Is barbel fishing in decline" thread, I wonder if we have reached the ultimate weight for Barbus Barbus?
It is some time now since the record was set and many of our rivers have a stock of aged, large fish, but the real monsters are no longer there, apparently.
