Paul, celebrate the near fifty years of barbel fishing you've enjoyed. It's far more than many will experience and now you have new targets, have fun pursuing those.
Oliver, the 15ft rod is cursed. You need to sell it ASAP!😉
It's one that's on my wish-list but can't really justify the outlay. I've had a dabble with one and seen it put to good use by others. Great for big barbel!
Alternatively, buy a dirt-cheap pair of polarised clip-ons. In fact buy two or three pairs with different colour tints for varying conditions. It's a great addition to your prescription varifocal lenses.
The Parker Angling TBR2 is on sale on eBay (identical to the Trafford one but more expensive. The original was sub £30).
The latter is a great lightweight tripod for banks where you can push the spikes into. I've used it for barbel and zander fishing and as long as you have your spikes shoved...

It's all about layering IMO, but then again, I often walk quite a distance and tend to sweat no matter how cold it is. I'm another ex-miltary Goretex fan and can recommend these to wear underneath...

I have two Korum ruckbags, the latter being the deluxe version. Unfortunately one of the zip-pulls broke, so I contacted Korum for a spare. I got the same response as you Haydn, in other words, nowt. Today I tried to prize the part of the zip that holds the pull only for it to break off.😡
