For float fishing for barbel I actually bought a 13ft series 7 drennan power carp waggler which has the detachable handle for packing into a "set up" rod case and is slightly beefier than the tench rod. I have been very pleased with it's performance and ability to pressure large barbel away from...
Let me kick start a thread with a useful item that has improved my fishing. It's a pair of folding secateurs. They are fairly light, cheap (£10 or less) and fit in a pocket like scissors but are really useful to remove the stinging nettle or thorny branch that just happens to be in the wrong...
Interesting about a red light torch filter not spooking fish but is it the colour of the light or the intensity? Most red light filters are a lot dimmer than the white light. If the red light was as bright as the white light would they be spooked?
I do a lot of trotting for barbel and prefer...
Many hooks are barbed or micro barbed. What would you use as a barbless hook? And don't say take off the barbs as my club specifies manufactured as barbless! I have tried various ones but can't seem to find one I really like
Please do tell about the chair leg through the punt. I remember the story of one guy who stood up in a punt when he hooked a powerful carp. He leaned back to put more pressure on and the line snapped. He fell backwards into the lake and completely disappeared under the water still holding his...
Years ago Dave Steuart developed a rig where he used say 4 small size 10 trebles along a deadbait as he felt pike were becoming accustom to big trebles and only "lipping" baits. He could then strike straight away. Similarly last winter I was not hooking pike properly so I moved the tail root...
I remember one day on a large pit where you might get a run a session where I had about 12 takes on deadbaits in the day. But each time the indicator just dropped off and about one to three inches of line was taken. Struck straight away - nothing, left it 30 -60 seconds - nothing. I did not want...
Try Bama Sokkets - but you might need a bigger boot. You wear them over an ordinary pair of thick socks. Sometimes you can wring sweat out of the outer layer but the inner layer is still dry and warm
In this weeks AT & AM there is an advert for a Matt Hayes Wild Low Chair from Dragon Carp (!). Not the Wild Rover Chair but the Wild Low Chair. It looks like the old Efgeeco Packaseat and could do the job you want.
When roving lure fishing in my small rucksack I have one of those low small 12...
Recently I borrowed a mate's scales to weigh a good barbel as the batteries in mine had died. 10:22 the scales read, which puzzled me, but apparently verified that I'd caught a double. It was only after returning the fish and returning the scales to my mate that I realised I'd been looking at...
I find its not so much the travelling there as the travelling back. Not so much the miles as the time. Leaving before dawn can be a trip of 1.25 hours, coming back can be up to 3 hours!
I don't like the idea of a wet slimy net down your back. I sometimes walk the barbel back to the shore with a waiting net, sometimes hand land them. Last year I had a brainwave. I screwed a landing net head onto my long extending bankstick. Then push the bankstick into the river where I am...
The best I have used are the NISA feeders. I used several types on the Wye and had various problems with tangles and twists but when I went in Woodys at Hereford I got the NISA feeders and have had no more problems. The only issue may be availiability - I have also bought them around London but...
Bama Sokkets go over a pair of thick socks - I use merino wool. Then you don't need to carry an extra pair of socks to change as all the moisture is wicked to the outside but you might need a bigger size of boot! Bama Sokkets are on ebay £8 post free.
I spoke to a CC Moore rep at the Carp Show and he told me meteor was being discontinued because it was their worst selling product so they were dropping it as they only wanted a certain number of baits and as equinox was their latest bait the worst selling was dropped.
I got some Canadian Baffin Trappers lat winter and have been OK so far but I see some shops are doing heat gel packs for both hands and feet which might be worthwhile when its really cold
