    Groundbait ?

Hi Richard, What methods do you prefer for where you fish?

    Hook choice???

Surprised no one has mentioned the talon tips, excellent hair rig hooks, imo.

Best approach for low density water.

    Thanks, Jeff.

Best approach for low density water.

I've found a stretch not too far from home where there are a few Barbel, not many come out, but it is a nice place to fish and I don't mind putting a bit of time in there. What would be my best approach? I'm thinking maybe maggot feeder on one rod, depending on nuisance fish numbers, and meat on...

How did your Barbel journey start ?

Mine started in the Caribbean, of all places! We met a lovely couple while on holiday, he was a fisherman but hadn't brought any gear, so I lent him some of mine and we had a good bit of sport. When we got back we stayed in touch, and he asked if I'd ever fished for Barbel ,which I hadn't., and...

    Age or discrimination

Ahh, but you are missing something. The Wye is a sssi, which means it is an offence to trim back branches and vegetation along it's length. Please feel free to dispose of huge quantities of untreated sewage and Agricultural run off in it , however.

    Meat fishing a nearside slack

I'm always interested about this half tin of meat thing, in the sense of the Barbel must nibble bits off initially as their Gobs aren't that big?

    What's the forecast.

I generally look at the Met Office. Sometimes it can change completely from one hour to the next.

    Unexpected 'cut-offs'

I've had this happen a couple of times, sharp tug and everything snipped off!

    Talk about peaking too early.

Brilliant, doesn't get any better than that!

    Trotting/Wading

He is good to watch but I wish he would stop using that bloody abu closed face and get a proper reel for trotting😁

    A trip to the wye

Hi Neil, They were in July. I think they only stopped for a while during Covid.

    A trip to the wye

Hi Clive, There's quite a bit of fishing on the lower river not that far from where you are staying, Wye and Usk beats to book online, you've got Newport anglers water at Symonds Yat, some stretches around Monmouth, ( not sure who controls these), and Bishopswood, which is just downstream from...

    Trotting/Wading

The Visions aren't bad for the money, and imo have the best shaped stocking foot. On some brands, the foot is like a baggy old sack !

    Trotting/Wading

I'd also reccomend you go somewhere where you can try them on, as there is a surprising amount of difference in different manufacturers sizing. Another advantage of waders is that you can access areas where you are fishing on firm ground but would be very wet getting there without them.

    Specialist Rods (1.25-1.5lbtc)

Have a go at fishing for grey mullet

Sounds great, coincidentally I was out after them today but they were being extra tricky, only managed a smallish one..

    trotting rod

I use a 14ft plus for Barbel on the Wye and it has dealt extremely well with them, even in faster water. I'm a big fan of the range generally, the 12ft Carp waggler is probably my overall favourite for most of the fishing I do, which is small river Chubbing. Great for canal Tench as well and...

    Riverfly Monitoring

Very worthwhile, the more data that can be gathered the better.
