    Best time for catching...

In my 2 seasons, 62% of my barbel have come in an hour either side of sunset. That said, I rarely fish mornings or after midnight. I noticed on one heavily wooded stretch last summer that the sun seems pass over the river, and shine directly down it, from about 2 hours before sunset to half...

Do you think there were Other UK Barbel species than barbus barbus in the past

I'm not sure if I read the original post correctly, but if it was originally asking whether we thought there was a possibility that traces of the DNA of another species of barbel survived down the centuries in indigenous Dearne barbel, or those of a river that it flows into, then it has to be a...

http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/angling/angling-anglers-stumped-by-bankside-devastation-1-8485412 ray - I know Dave Rushton of Leeds has sent or is sending you before and after videos of this sickening destruction on the Nidd at Hammerton (to which the picture attached to the...

Ea riverbank tree and vegetation habitat destruction..message to all.......

I will forward this to the clubs on the Upper Aire, not least Bradford City AA who have been devastated in both senses of the word and have been active in their opposition/liaison with the EA. Their work parties have already started to put 'snags' back in.

    The next barbel river record

Interesting to see 8.33% of the votes going to rivers that have had not a single report posted on BFW in 2016-2017. Got to love a bit of "omerta" ;-)

    Help settle an argument

I wonder how many people will fish with 3 rods for a session or two as a bit of an experiment at the end of this season, to see if they fancy getting the new 3-rod licence for next? I'm considering it (the 3-rod licence, I mean, not breaking the rules), for the sort of big wide, steady-flowing...

    Lost the mojo...

Whereas I spend a lot of time fishing and wishing I had better job prospects. Approaching mid-fifties, washed up, rejection after rejection - even the Mail didn't want me for Xmas - no prospects of getting a decent pension pot together, so if I ever do get a decent job that I can tolerate again...

    Best of the cheap pins

Can anyone remind me which reel it is that the Ikonix IKX200 is identical to? Iknonix have gone out of business and I need a new triangular ratchet thingy, so need to email the company that sells the identical one, presumably supplied from the same source in China? do I remember reading that...

    Thermometer

First chance I've had to really look at Ray's graph properly and I'm blown away by how useful it is - especially if it's 'typical' (or even archetypical) of the other years that he kept these wonderful records. It goes some way to answering a number of questions for a relative beginner which...

    Thermometer

Oh yes ...my description above could also fit that stretch. I was thinking of a different river and a bigger weir .... but your suggestion would mean I could fish for a bit longer... so you've got me properly torn now ....thanks! EDIT: your suggestion works out about £17 cheaper for me...

    Thermometer

Bit of a change of subject (I'll justify it by saying my thermometer, one of the 99p ones recommended above, hasn't arrived yet, which is true) but, I was wondering which swims to target tomorrow and/or Friday... So am I correct in assuming that in a sudden mild spell the cold water warms up...

    Supersized supermoon!

You have to be realistic though and my local rivers were icy torrents yesterday, but above all the whole flow from surface to river bed was solid with leaves. night fishing is a lot less relaxing when you have to reel in every 5 minutes to de-leaf. The Aire & Wharfe are past their peak...

    Supersized supermoon!

You have to be realistic though and my local rivers were icy torrents yesterday, but above all the whole flow from surface to river bed was solid with extra leaves washed in by the rising waters. Fished 4 houurs just cos I'd made the journey and it was nice to be out, but the chances of a bite...

    Supersized supermoon!

I do quite well when I watch University Challenge and got one right about the moons of Uranus the other day, more through knowledge of mythology than astronomy, and I could have told you that the SUN rises in the west on Venus, but it has amazed and unsettled me that I never knew till yesterday...

    Supersized supermoon!

Well, to answer my own question after googling, I have a pretty good general knowledge but it seems that I had managed to reach 53-y-o without knowing that the moon pretty much always rises in the same place ... I think it's 'cos when you read about the night sky it always says"Venus will rise...
