    Work parties

Some of the key factors in successful work parties in one of the largest associations in the north (50 miles of river, 33 river venues + several still waters ) are: 1. Affiliated clubs 'adopting' some of their local venues. This only applies to a minority of venues, but in effect means that the...

    hooklength length???

Some interesting thoughts here. I had no idea some people consider 2 foot to be a long hook-length and so may think about shortening up a bit at times from my average of around 3.5 feet, as I do get too many tangles on the cast. I like the idea of just dropping the rig in and backing off on...

13 th ?[ umpteenth ]Ousemeisters Barbel Challenge 2018 - Yorkshire Ouse , Newton on Ouse 22/9/2018

I tried fishing there yesterday evening. Couldn't hold bottom with 5oz, even where I could cast 50 yards upstream. Problem was the vegetation on the line, all the small stuff coming down, never seen so much grass in a Yorkshire river, maybe stuff that hasn't been well-rooted in the banks of the...

    its raining !!!!!

Heard about the Naburn lock one - where was the other? [EDIT] ah, OK, I've googled around and saw you're probably referring to Foss Basin, that makes sense, not much flow there either. Saw a big thunderstorm-related fish kill a couple of years ago on the Upper Aire meself, not pleasant. I...

    its raining !!!!!

When we left the Nidd yesterday at dusk, water was coming over the full width of the weir for the first time in the day and the first time in 2 months. Beautiful. Lovely cool water temperatures too. Looks like it's peaked for now, 2.5 feet up on where it's been all those weeks, but more rain due...

    its raining !!!!!

After two and a half days of the occasional heavy downpour (every single one occurring when I was trying to play cricket, cycling home from work, trying to see an eclipse or walking the dog) has finally turned into persistent rain here in Yorkshire and my favourite local river is teeny enough...

    DO Dissolved Oxygen

Many factors affect D/O, as per the original B.S. post (no please don't misunderstand what I mean by B.S. there). Let's see some reliable readings from above and below the same weir. Or read any scientific paper on the subject.

    DO Dissolved Oxygen

Every weir is as different as every river is different, with many thousands of scholarly papers examining the comparative benefits of drop distance, best ratio of drop distance to depth at bottom of weir, angle, type of nappe, nature of the bottom and banks, etc .... but the more of those...

    DO Dissolved Oxygen

The BS's intentions here are obviously very good, but unfortunately a mistake in the science (conflating the hugely positive effects on DO of weir aeration with the more mixed benefits of turbulence) and their obvious manipulation of the science (with the patronising little bits that they have...

Petition for the abolition of the closed season on rivers

Definitely not a 'grammar Nazi' myself, and wouldn't have said anything about 2 or 3 commas where there should have been full stops or conjunctions ... but there are 8 mistakes in less than 10 lines here, as well as being one day short on the dates of the closed season itself. It just won't be...

Petition for the abolition of the closed season on rivers

The English of this petition is even worse than the otter one. If you don't know what full stops, commas, apostrophes and capital letters are and are not for, and can't be bothered to get someone else to check it for you, do you really expect anyone to take it seriously?

    spawning

Apparently quite a few people gave up their I hear that quite a number of people from various organisations spent their bank holiday in boats / scuba gear / waders with a massive net, to try to finally catch Sammy before the spawning starts ... but he gave them the slip every time ... they'll...

    spawning

Watched pre-spawning behaviour throughout* the day yesterday on a Yorkshire river, barbel shoaling up within yards of the spawning gravels in very encouraging numbers (given that it's not a stretch known for many barbel). They seemed unable to resist basking in the open in the warm surface...

    Otter petition.

I've signed, in order to help bring the issue into the wider political sphere, but it is a bit of a shame that such a short text hasn't been proof-read for the two punctuation errors it contains (where what should be separate sentences are joined by commas). Looks bad on something that needs to...

    Winter targets

I for one am happy to 'declare' for this year, if only so that my year-on-year tally keeps rising next year.

    Night fishing on Wye

Cliff's the expert and has the fish-finding skills, but as a total tourist who's made just 4 trips to the wye in the last 3 years (total 14 days fishing), 10 out of my 14 fish have come in the 2 hours after dark, one more at the start of dusk, 2 in the morning and one at lunchtime. None at all...

    PVA Bags

safety pins work too, which I cover in plasticene to reduce tangle potential and shininess. but I never thought about peforating the bags till a couple of weeks ago, doh, even though I had all these safety pins handy. Big safety pins also make the best baiting needles for push-stops. I...

    11th Ousemeisters Barbel Challenge 23/9/2017

Excellent news about the ferry - is there a cyclable track through the B. Hall grounds to Newton on Ouse village?

    11th Ousemeisters Barbel Challenge 23/9/2017

Great to hear it went so well, with quite a few barbel out, doing justice to how well it's fished recently, and to the spirit and organisation of the event. Well done everyone.
