    mortimer & whitehouse gone fishing

Yes, I've seen some of them and it wasn't pleasant. A short etiquette course upon joining a club should be mandatory.

    A new low

Probably wanted some human company, like it had before it was inflicted on your river.

    Winter boots/wellies?

That's it. You've got there already as long as the socks are genuine. A set of merino wool thermals top and bottom and a warm coat, you could go ice fishing and walk there and back. Breathable jacket of course. The new Arctic sports are fleece lined and could well be too warm for walking any...

    Angling mail

Hardly surprising. My local corner shop reports that his newspaper sales are down 80% in the last 10yrs. I've not bought one since I got my first smartphone. The weeklies used to be essential reading for me until I realised they were just recycling articles every 5 years or less. Worst...

    Float rod and reel recommendations

Edit, the Acolyte to use for Barbel is the plus models. Yes, it does and is a great silverfish rod with the light weight and the fine tip. Hook into something like a Barbel or Carp though and it can really apply the pressure. Can't say I've ever thought I needed something heavier duty when...

    Float rod and reel recommendations

There's certainly no need to spend a lot of money on a centerpin and indeed the Okuma Sheffield is great. Personally I dislike the on off ratchet knob which needs two hands to operate, one to hold the rod and one to operate the knob and it's quite heavy at 280 grams (10 oz). It's also quite...

    Maxima chameleon

Maxima Chameleon is extremely popular as a leader for sea Trout and Salmon anglers everywhere. Fly or spinning. On the Wear 10lb BS is usual and the anglers expect to encounter double figure sea Trout at night occasionally. For Salmon, daytime, probably 15lb+ BS. They can go to 30lb, a 15lb sea...

Showed up on a...

    Best fishing book

Has to be "Going Fishing" by Negley Farson. "Stillwater angling" Walker. "Drop me a line" Walker and Maurice Ingham. "The complete angler" Issac Walton. "Lines in pleasant places" William Senior. I have others If members like older and varied angling stories.

    Split Cane rods

Just the amount of them available, they used to fetch loads of money because they were rare, it seems today they're not. Of course it could be there's just a few and they're not selling and being re advertised.

    Split Cane rods

I've got an Ebay alert on for Avon rods so get to see all the cane rods including mk 1V Carp rods as they're advertised. It strikes me that there are far more B. James and other famous name rods for sale now than at any time in the past. B. James in fact was just a tackle shop in Ealing not a...

Hard reel case for fixed spool reels

Came across these on Ebay. Never seen a suitable hard case before so I thought I'd share it. Looking at the dimensions a pin could probably fit in too...

Opinion wanted -- Greys Prodigy Barbel TXL

If the 'travel rod' is an essential I'd look to the game fishing sector. Virtually all fly rods are now 4 piece and spinning rods probably 70%. I recently got a 15-60g Sakura 9' 4 piece for Salmon fishing and I'd feel confident of landing anything that swims in Britain on it. Would make short...

    Barbel on the Pole

Same water as I saw the Barbel debacle holds a few Carp that get in from the river. Summer it's extremely weedy and one of the club matchmen thought it was great fun to catch Carp off the top in the weed holes. Using the pole. He caught the biggest one in there one opening day, about 19lb. It...

    Barbel on the Pole

Saw someone doing it one day. He hooked one and it was embarrassing to watch. I'm not one for banning things but for the safety of the fish, pole fishing for Barbel should be. Think he lost it in the end, after about half an hour of the Barbel playing the angler. No doubt the poor thing went...

    Best nite lites

Avoid superglue and glass at all cost. The glass and the superglue expand and contract at different rates and the glass will always break. Used to run a windscreen repair business and anyone who'd put superglue on a crack to stop it cracking further had a badly cracked screen the next morning.

    Dacron alternative

I use fluorescent yellow braid mainline on my pins. Doesn't seem to put off the Barbel. Use a 9" nylon hooklength and a cage feeder.

    Tidal Thames Massive fish kill

Of course the sensible thing to do, from a fish welfare point of view, would be to open Richmond half lock and Teddington weir for a while to flush out the sewage. Then return back to normal. The annual draw down is due in a few months but best to return to the present level to dilute any sewage...

    Introducing loose feed?

How about the old method of nailing a dead sheep up a tree.? Could even camo it these days.

    Dacron alternative

Dacron was / is popular for use on multipliers sea fishing. Might find some in a sea fishing specialist shop. Permanent marker can colour it how you want.
