Tidal Thames Massive fish kill

Of course the sensible thing to do, from a fish welfare point of view, would be to open Richmond half lock and Teddington weir for a while to flush out the sewage. Then return back to normal. The annual draw down is due in a few months but best to return to the present level to dilute any sewage coming back in on the tide.
I can't see any of this happening.

Agreed Paul, no idea why that isn't done. When there was a similar event in about 2004 I went along to Richmond about a week later with just a float rod and some maggots and had a lot of dace and roach, so the surviving fish may recover quickly. Just absolutely dispiriting that it is still happening. London is simply at capacity I feel and the problem is a long standing one, although I'm pretty sure London's population density has increased a fair bit over the past 20 years thus aggravating the situation.

Had a fish kill on two sections of the Colne this last week too ,Thames water have a lot to answer for. Its become a regular allowed occurrence for all Thames water sewage farms to dump at times of peak flow around London. Lets hope for a fine bigger than the £20 million they got last time, then they might start sorting their shit.

Graham, do you have a source for that? I can't find anything online - was planning to go on the tidal Friday morning.

19-Aug-2020 20:00 Hammersmith pumping station
From: Rower Notification <rower.notification@thameswater.co.uk> Rower notification from Thames Water:Hammersmith Pumping Station (PS) Following the recent rainfall, Hammersmith Pumping Station has in the last hour discharged untreated sewage into the River Thames, due to lack of capacity in the existing sewer network. Tideway, a new independent company, has started construction work on the Thames Tideway Tunnelalso known as thesuper sewer-to address the unacceptable volume and frequency of discharges at this and 33 other locations. Main tunnelling work has begun and the project is due to be completed by early 2024. For more information visit: www.tideway.london Regards Thames Water.

They did the same a day earlier.

I have a video of the fish kill but camnot upload.

This is a post from the river Chess association about the EA cover up that is going on around the country. The Environment Agency produced the Storm Overflow Assessment Framework in June 2018,without any consultation. This Framework allows them to count multiple consecutive un-permitted sewage discharges as one event. How does this work . On the river Chess daily discharges for over 50 days from Febuary to April 17th 2020 equals one event. You need 60 events using the EA counting method in a year before they will investigate. So how do you get to 60 events in one year using this method, you can never get to that point. Using the EA method you can Discharge everyday of the year and it will only count as 1 Event.
