Not fished for barbel for quite a while now and as much as i like sitting by the river watching the wildlife im there to catch barbel and the bristol avon stretch i fished is now as good as dead in that department.

remember doing this on a day out with trefor west many years ago and caught a 10lb on corn with a 3" hook link the only thing i would do different is add a pva bag as the guys suggest above.
Gotta agree with anthony i used to use isotopes but found them all a bit dim then went over to useing red/pink starlight types which i used to get by the box from somewhere 500 for less than an isotope and you can see them without squinting.

got some berghaus water proof trousers about 4 years ago now use them for walking and fishing and must say they are excelent and have never let me down.

just be warned i joined keynsham angling last year and the place is very very over grown with very few swims i walked miles of it and could not get near the river on most of it so go look first if i was you. Steve barbel swim over weirs my mate caught a 14lb barbel on the avon and i caught it a...
who can stop you putting in a gallon of hemp the day before you go then fish a worm over the top the next day.
And i have no intension of doing so but can be done, also i know someone who owns land on a river who says he does not recognise the close season and people can fish when they like:D...
He would of been told to go forth and multiply by me and to call the police as it says on my licence use of two rods fishing not one packed away which im not useing.
