    Cork handle protection?

Absolutely not. Terrible idea. More likely to seal absorbed moisture in the cork (and hastening the breakdown of the cork and glue) than to keep moisture out. No rod makers (with any sense) seal their rod handles up from new.

just when you thought you had seen it all

I’m waiting till they bring out the hot tub to go with it.

    What's your choice of reel

2 x Jap Shimano Stradic X gtm for me when two-rodding it for barbel or smaller carp and tench. Also have a somewhat rarer Stradic x gtmh that I tend to use on its own. Never really used baitrunners When barbel fishing, though I do have three 8000 shimanos. I’ve always found the fighting drag on...

    Wanted Fox barbel duo

Best tip for re-sealing cork handles is to not re-seal cork handles. Cork should be left to breath, so to speak, and this is why handles are always left in the white and unfinished when you buy rods new. Varnished or oiled cork looks ghastly, trust me. Best way to clean the cork is with a...

Choosing between three barbel rods to get me started

Agree with this completely. 2.25 tc or even 2lb tc is a broom stick of a rod on the upper Lea and Great Ouse. 11 foot is probably ok on the Lea but personally I’d prefer a 12‘ 1.75 (power mesh Or similar) that covers both rivers and would be better on the Great Ouse where at times you’ll likely...

    Paneer Cheese?

I‘ve never tried marmite but it seems Plausible that it would make a decent attractant bait additive. Some years ago I bought a bait soak/glug that seemed reasonably well regarded at the time. Soon after I also bought some of this from Costco...

    Paneer Cheese?

well I guess they’ll either love it or hate it. 😉

    Paneer Cheese?

No mate. Mine are pink and fluffy. 😉 Those are the head chef’s. When I broached the subject of taking some for bait she wasn’t impressed. Comments along the lines of “Those f…ing fish eating better than we do…. This paneer is too good to be throwing in for bloody fish to eat” ….. and so...

    Paneer Cheese?

Small batch of tandoori paneer made up in the freezer and ready to go. As soon as I’ve been out and blanked as normal I shall report back on just how well I blank with it.

    Whats your PB?

Moved up to Bedfordshire in 2003 and set myself a target of a 15lber while it was still possible but knowing full well that the glory days of the Gt ouse were well in the past. Nearly two decades have past and my fifteen looks if not impossible then very, very highly unlikely now. 13lb 12oz is...

    Invasive species,Prussian carp

I joined a new club this year, mainly on account of them having done what I’d previously suggested to the club mentioned above. Biggleswade & Hitchin have a small lake called Grace pond from which they have removed most of the predators, and as far as can be, the carp. This, on Peter Rolfe’s...

    Invasive species,Prussian carp

Like the poor old crucian really needs another existential threat….. And then the general apathy of most angling clubs towards them. I once suggested to one of the committee members of one of my clubs that they should consider removing the carp from one of their little pleasure fisheries and...

    Paneer Cheese?

Good idea. My misses is always using paneer in curry as we are both veggie and paneer is just about the best thing you can use In the absence of chicken or lamb. Can’t speak for Boris but I bloody love the stuff. Next time she does a tandoori paneer or shashlick or kadhai, I shall sequester...

Slipping chair and/or bedchair legs - any solutions/fixes?

Try keying up the inner tubing with some p150 or p180 wet and dry or such like.

    Best Barbel Books

Nothing much has changed regarding either the nature of barbel, or the catching of them, in the last ten years. So I doubt there’s any great revelations in anything published recently. if your friend is interested in barbel biology and life cycle ( with a view to becoming a better angler, of...

    Club Tickets.

3 for me. vauxhall, Biggleswade & Hitchin, Bedford AC The first two of these have become slightly harder to get these past two years, with books selling out very quickly. Biggleswade have a system whereby current members have priority to re-join, which I think is a good idea. Vauxhall don’t...

    Split Cane rods

I’ve never been into that either. One of the reasons I stopped posting on another forum was when I realised it had become rather po-faced about the whole traditional thing and mere talk of carbon could result in stern warnings yet talk of having bought a Frank Spencer style tank-top knitted...

    Split Cane rods

Nice thought Mike. I’m not sure my dad ever fished that Wizard or not. He’d acquired it at some point many years ago and it had been ‘restored’ but in a somewhat ghastly way. The previous work had resulted in the gold label being stripped and a horrendous whipping job in tow-rope gaudy cotton...

    Split Cane rods

Eleven years ago I restored an Allcocks Wizard for my dad. Sadly I lost my father four months ago. Yesterday I took his rod fishing on the river Ivel.
