I think we can call today’s events “chasing chublets”.
Absolutely nothing of any merit coming out for me today.
Managed a good dozen but all small fish.
Still my spliced tip Avvy2k got a little work out…….. still the nicest actioned float rod I’ve ever used. Just absolute perfection

I haven’t had the reel long. Been hammering it for a couple of months and I really love using it. It’s an excellent little pin.

These chub are just babies. Probably look bigger in the pictures than they actually were.
2-3lb tops.

Be careful they don't do some gymnastics and impale themselves on your float Richard .

I recieved a new rod yesterday, "a 15ft long rod"!
The longer rod proved to be very handy today as there was quite a strong gusty downstream wind and the extra length made mending the line and controling the float easier.
It was about twenty minuites before I caught a chub of about a pound, then another couple of about two and a half pounds. Then the barbel showed up and I had quite a few, I took a some pic's and released about as many again mid river. I weighed the best one and it was 10.8lb so a decent fish which did test the new rods metal.
I had quite a few smaller chublets of about ten ounces and a few nice dace mixed in amongst the barbel.

Thanks HZ, its just a bit of old cut down bath towel which I use to hang over my trouser belt and wipe my hands on.
I dunked it in the river, rung it out and used it to lay the fish on.

I wasnt questioning about fish handling, I am sure you know how to handle them safely. Just thought it too big for a hand towel

I forgot to mention, when I was playing in the largest of the barbel yesterday, I could make out another good sized fish of some kind swimming along side it, possibly a barbel or large chub and i'm sure I could make out some other fishy shadows/shapes around the hooked fish.
I have often seen similar when retrieving a perch, several perch trying to get the lure out of the hooked fish's mouth.
Other than yesterday I can only remember one other occasion when i've seen barbel following a hooked fish about and on that day there were several barbel that appeared to be trying to get to the bunch of maggots visible in the hooked barbels mouth.
Has anyone else ever seen that scenario when retrieving a barbel?

Not seen it with barbel, but definitely with river carp, two or three following the hooked one in. I’ve always wondered if it’s a curiosity thing or competitive feeding, maybe both.
