Perch

As can’t stop thinking about a big Perch…..(seems that everyone else is catching them apart from me! 🤣)
Completely given up with the dropshotting, not for me so am concentrating on float fishing (mainly stillwaters).
Has anyone used the Drennan extension float rod? Seems perfect for the job (2 piece, 1lb TC) but none locally i can have a ‘waggle’ with before i order one

Where you based Nigel? I have a new one (bought 2 for Tenching but only ever used 1) might be tempted to let it go but don’t want to get into posting rods

I’m in Crewe in Cheshire?

Nigel, I have the Drennan SS 13ft extension rod and I’ve had a number of good Perch to 3.15lb using it, from the River Severn near Shrewsbury.

Bought it just up the road from you at Dave’s of Middlewich. I like the fact I can make it up at home and take it to the riverbank in a 6’ rod sleeve 👍🏻

This said, on rivers, I find a 15’ Acolyte Plus better, due to the increased float control offered by the extra length. The 13’ SS extension will however be fine on stillwaters 👍🏻

Probably a bit far, I’m in Bucks…
If you can find one in shops they are great rods with plenty of grunt for chucking out a small live bait under a bobber but not lacking in finesse for flicking out small baits too
Yes, thanks for the thought but a bit too far as you say

I’ve always used Daves for most of my stuff. Probably the best shop i’ve ever been in! I’ll order mine from there as no stock at the moment

They ordered me one in, without paying a deposit. Said if I didn’t like it, they would just sell it anyway.

Not sure which north west clubs you are in, but if you have access to the Severn, then you should consider checking it out. Here’s the best one from Sunday, just gone:

Wow! Would love a river perch (Llymm AC) but only tend to fish for Barbel these days. Didnt think it would be worth it but it obviously is!

That is a stunning ‘new’ looking Perch!

You’ll find Perch in every length of the Severn, trust me they are there.

I used to fish the canals round Nantwich, but no longer bother. There’s just no comparison 👍🏻
Yes, i’ve been fishing the canals and although they are in there, it’s not that enjoyable tbf. There is a couple of local ‘commercial’ type waters with a few lumps but again, not very enjoyable (i’m sounding too fussy). I’ll have to give it a go on the Severn as that would really appeal! I’ve spent the last 3 years trying to locate them in various club waters where nobody really targets them in the hope i drop on some surprises but as yet nowhere is giving up any hints of larger fish.

Nigel, the Lymm stretch above the Tern confluence would be my recommendation, particularly the slower deeper water at the upper end. I also think Rossall might hold some.

Yes, from, the waters i have available at the moment, i would say the ‘above the Tern’ stretch looks the most inviting? Very twisty, deeper holes, cover and slacks……i’m getting excited already lol

They don't always hang out in the slacks, had quite a few decent ones over the years out in the flow. My best from Rossall was a 2.09 from the bottom peg, as you know that is fairly fast flowing.

Noted! Are you trotting with worm (& magott) or flicking a static bait out into likely areas?

All the ones on float fished worm have been in slow moving areas, normally laying on, or with bait touching bottom. Ones in the flow have been on static ledgered baits, whether that be worm, maggot or small livebaits, big perch LOVE bleak, find a concentration of bait fish and the perch won't be far away. Word of warning, river pike are also partial to lobworms!
