    Maggots!

It is Jim! See how us southerners are ripped off! 😐

    Maggots!

Personally Ben the way I am approaching it is to only use them in specific circumstances. You know, low clear water, lower temperatures. Many times they are unnecessary and there are better options. On their day though..... I agree with you though, can be blinking expensive compared to the old...

    Maggots!

Thanks Etienne. Easy to become complacent and rely on just boilies and pellets. If you have a slow day you will never know if another bait/approach would have worked better. 👍

    Maggots!

Thanks Alan. Yes you can tell alot more about the fish in your swim fishing maggots. Roach particularly are always welcome. If I lived more locally I would target the Roach properly.

    Maggots!

Round about 4 quid Roger. I think you can get away with a few pints plus hemp from now onwards so not too bad cost wise.

    Very kind Ash. 🙂

    Maggots!

The only Barbel fishing I have really done this season (apart from a few trips to the H. Avon) is on the middle Severn. It suits me and the amount of time I want to put into it - apart from the drive to get there!). With so much now centred around a pellet or boilie approach I thought I'd...

Yes know what you mean. Feel the same about anything to do with the Dorset Stour! 😪

    Small leads and short hooklinks

All I know is reducing the hooklink to 18" - 2' has made no difference to my catches. I am not saying it never will but I think it is very often unnecessary. Clear river, wary fish hanging well back then maybe. But after dark, coloured water I doubt it. Yes I know the main point is to stop the...

    Braid hooklength.

Yes. Bank tackle braid both standard in 15lb and kevlar coated are very good. I only use a short length tied to a nylon hooklink ( combi link). I agree though, anywhere where you are worried about snags, boulders etc. A coated braid is a good idea. I have used Jellywire in the past but find the...

    New John Baker video

It takes a leap of faith for anyone used to fishing over beds of hemp and pellets but a good bait like his F2 for example will catch with a handful of freebies around it. It is true that how much you put in really depends on the amount of fish activity in your swim. If you have Chub in your swim...

    Head torches

I was going to say the same! Damn things! Amount of times I've opened my rucksack to find it's been on for hours! Only have to breathe on it it seems! 😅

    Nut based boilies

I agree with you Cliff. My take on it has always been that if they're feeding on boilies any decent bait will catch them. Look how many boilies of all different makes and ingredients are going in on popular fisheries. That said, I do believe in using a good reliable bait with a past history for...

    which loop knot ?

Cliff. I use the figure of 8 as well. Ibtend to use the same nylon for a hooklink as the main line attached via the loop and a link swivel. It breaks under extreme pressure in exactly the same place pretty well every time ( at the knot). I see this as a good thing personally.
