Perch

Paul, The Fox specialist, 1lb TC is a cracking all round light ledger rod with an avon top and a quiver tip, not sure if they still do them though...........

On the look out for a couple of light leger rods for perch; nothing expensive as i dont have a good track record with good quality rods:eek:

The TFG classic avon at 1.2 test looks quite good on paper, but i havent seen any up close. I dont want a quiver feeder, just a light 2 section job for close to med range legering if anyone can recommend one.

I have been looking for something similar myself but no-one seems to make anything decent, i do have a pair of FOX 1lb tc jobs (the original green ones,) and a pair 3-7 Tri casts but both a still a bit over the top for Perching, so if you find anything let me know mate.

Take a look at the Grauvell range. I have a 12ft 1.5lb TB with two top sections, one them being supplied with three quiver tips. Low diameter, through action, silicon carbide guides throughout, not too bad a finish, not a bad all-round rod. There is a 1.2lb version, too, I believe, which might be a peach for chub and perch.

I use the original JW avon's.. use the tip section when up-streaming worm and the standard tips when livebaiting. Ideal rods for both small river fishing when you need to go through lots of undergrowth etc when a long rod is a burden but also work well when fishing pits and ressies with feeder tactics..

Like them so much I've got 6 of them in the garage.. bloody ebay! always tempting me :)

Only downside is the original reel fittings loosen after time and need replacing. As it happens just about to send off four for new handles and rings.. lovely rods.

Thanks for the replies men,

Was hoping to get out today and have a look around at whats out there in the three main tackle shops in swindon, but have been holed up for three days with a stinker of a cold.

The new rovex version of the JW rod looks quite nice and i think they were on offer in one of the mags recently for £50 each, which is right up my alley price wise. I also prefer 11ft as i wont be casting distances and 1.2 test sounds a bit nearer the mark. I'll have a search around for the grauvell rods on the net. The cheapest i can find the fox rods is £107, which is a bit more than i was looking to pay, but i'll check on ebay and see whats about.

Thanks again guys.

Paul

Oh well, best laid plans and all that; actually settled for a couple of 2 piece 11ft browning syntec light pellet waggler rods (£50 each) as apart from the ringing they felt perfect for a light flick or underarm cast with a bomb or small feeder and the action is beautiful. Nice and soft, but with a stiffening of the butt section around a third of the way up. Will also be ideal for close in float work. Now need to get them christened. :D

Happy new year everyone.

Got my winter perch campaign off to a start. Hard work after all that cold weather and snow melt in the river, but managed a 2-4 on lob tails tipped with red maggot, just on dusk.

Anyone else been out?

Paul

Hi Paul,
That's a nice start in these conditions, well done.
I've haven't started yet. Will concentrate on the pike for now, but come the middle of Feb I'll be out looking for those tigers

Ian

Thanks Ian, hoping for a three before the river season is out as all this perching is new ish to me. Nice to have a diversion from barbel and i have a funny feeling i'll be doing a little less barbel fishing and a little more perch fishing in the coming weeks/months.

Has anyone caught on prawns? Be interested to hear how you fish/present them and if they are any good on rivers.

regards

Paul

I have one of these rods, they are excellent, i bullied a 14lb barbel to the net with it !
I was getting a proper soaking at the time, - admitidly i didm't quite realise what was on the end of my line, until i had it at my feet.

A lovely tool for ledgering for most species, and can be used for float fishing as well.

Ian.

Will,

No not a member, but fished one of their sections/cuts last march (after reading one of your articles) ;) on a day ticket and had a few stripeys to nearly 2lbs on lures. The area i'm fishing has done 2 different 4s in recent times, so i'm hopeful, but will be happy with a good 3 as a loose target and i am told there are a few where i'm fishing.:) They seem to be getting big on the crayfish.

Ian G, yes they look like good rods. I must admit the browning syntec rods i bought a few weeks back are absolutely perfect for the job and it was a pleasure christening them yesterday. Real soft tip and middle and slighter stiffer butt for when i need to bully the odd fish.

3lb4oz Gt Ouse1.jpg
After struggling for the old barbel in 2009 on the Ouse i decided i'd have a few sessions with the worms and fished for anything that'd pick them up, which resulted in me taking this chunky pb of 3lb 4oz.
It is now something, and a species that i tend to chase a bit more.
Absolute stunning looking fish with a character like no other imo.

Nice fish Derren ... I love a big stripey :) ... don't forget to bell me if you fancy a trip to a special bit ;)

Well done Derren, wonderful fish.

Early bookies favourite for Anglers Mail specimen hunter of the year mate ;)

Lmao ;)

Cheers guys, since angling for more species i'm enjoying myself again and it seems like a whole new world as apposed to sitting behind the buzzers with a mass of pan clattering anglers ;)
