narrow drum dpeedis

this person who says the likes of Fred Crouch, Pete Reading, Chris Yates, Bob James, and Keith Spear are irresponsible anglers is like a reincarnated Botte.

Mike the United Kingdom Surfcasting Association all comers record is about 310 Meters and a bit. I cannot be bothered to log on to find out as their site is poo. The word record aint much more. The Humber at Faxfleet, its source from memory is about half a mile wide. Best you get down to the next UKSF meet and show us where we are going wrong mate. Daiwa and Shimano will be wetting themselves trying to sign you up as a consultant.

Modesty forbids me showing off Kevin , suffice to say I have had a word with Shimano and I believe a modern larger capacity version of the trusty Speedia is in the pipe line :D

Bob james who was caught fishing out of season? ? How could he be called irresponsible? ??????

Colin's referring to their use of a centrepin. The use of multiple question marks doesn't make a question more relevant.

Ah , but , was he using a centrepin ? Did he actually catch anything ? I thought he was just'' practicing '' .Come on Patrick lighten up a bit . Old Bob got his public kicking . If people want to use a centre pin let them get on with it , they are harming nobody and I bet they are as happy as Larry with their 1-1 line recovery rate . There is very little to beat the feeling of giving your drum a good batting , keeps you warm on a cold day :)

Mike each to there own. We will have to agree to disagree.

Though I feel BJ's excuse that he was practising is very poor and may want to sack his defence lawyer!

Hello Patrick , don't quiete know what we are agreeing to dsagree about , but yes, that's fine by me . For the record I use both the mangle and the pin , and gain equal gratification from both depending in circumstance . Yes poor old Bob, he did appear to get some poor legal advice , never mind I am sure he has learned is lesson , we all make mistakes ....

I find it odd that I should find myself in a degree of agreement with such an acerbic fellow as young Patrick, but here goes. I would not go so far as to call the use of a pin "irresponsible" when fishing for Barbel, but I do think it warrants a good deed more skill to achieve the same results as a fixed spool. My concern is that unskilled anglers will feel that to be considered the mutts nuts on the bank they need to be seen to be using a pin. This could result in them being in a total birds nest at the same time as the wily (?) Barbel takes off down river with disastrous consequences.

Very well put Richard. Perhaps the barbel society could run a workshop like the pikers run an unhooking course to ensure people are fully conversant with these reels.

I reckon it may need a little more skill/ practice to learn to cast properly with a centre pin , beyond that you couldn't really find a simpler casting and retrieving tool . I can't see how the trusty pin can be determind as a reel that could end up in disaster as you describe . You wind on , you wind off , simples . To be honest some of the more modern fixed spool reels with their '' fighting '' drags , free spool levers , anti reverse systems etc could confuse and trap the inexperienced . With a bit of common sense a centre pin is an eminently usaeble tool in most short to medium range angling situations , the fact that many still use them today speaks volumes , and I don't think this is simply down to nostalgia . Edit , just read your last post Patrick . I feel you need to give people a bit more credit , surely you don't really believe that anglers need special coaching to use centre pins , that's crackers !

It would be a good idea for a social Mike. And the people who profess to be a dab hand to show off their skills. Unless its all talk:rolleyes: that is.

Perhaps a small bucket placed 50yards away as a target and people pay a pound for 3 casts to get it in. Winners get bragging rights and the money goes to help the heroes? ?
After an evening pub session to make it a little cheekier?

Nice idea, Patrick. I'd use any excuse for a good pint. :)

Back to the point, however, and I had to laugh at Richard Hamlyn's assertion that more skill is needed to handle a 'pin when fishing for barbel. It takes a few minutes to learn how to control the rim of the reel with your thumb. Wouldn't you agree that most elements of angling require a degree of skill? And that, while some prefer to have lessons, most don't.

I had to check the date, i.e. it's not 1st April.

Not many people taking up the challenge!

Your silence speaks volumes centrepinners.

Richard,

Glad to give you a chuckle. However having thought about it you are probably correct. If only 10% of anglers use a pin and 10% of anglers catch 90% of the fish ..........mmmmmmmm.........perhaps that's where I'm going wrong.

Patrick how many coffee grinders have taken up the challenge???????????????????????
I think most people would agree that different branches of angling are not more skilful than others, they just require different skills.
