narrow drum dpeedis

Fresh bait every thirty minutes always helps though the gentle plucks are always there but almost always end up as chub.

Patrick,

One thing i've never fully understood about centrepins....

Most people who use them are using the latest in modern rods, tackle and methods yet want to use a piece of accompanying kit that is, in essence, an ancient bit of kit (even though it has been built in modern times)......

Saying that as having never used one my opinion is biased...

Ben, centre pins are lovely to use in their own right and it isn't necessary to use a split cane rod to appreciate this. A good one is superbly engineered and used properly, very effective. The argument as to which is better under which circumstances, or, as Patrick has bizarley suggested, species, depends on the individual. Some people prefer them, I certainly do for trotting, but I also use them from time to time because I enjoy using them. I wouldn't use one to try to fish the far bank on a medium sized river but for close quarter fishing they are superb.

Alex,

Nice post. I can see why others may like them but I was just giving my opinion- i wasnt critisising others using them.

I don't think anything wrong with them - they just aren't for me! Like you say I can see the attraction with trotting a float with one but I wouldn't be too confident in using one for the barbel.

Having said that I do believe there is a slight bit of snobbery by some anglers shown toward non-pin users. Like you I agree -each to their own and also I think you seem to have the right approach in that you use both types of reel.

Argue? I think the word you are looking for is debate. Alex as I have previously said I have a pin which I use for trotting a stick. Its ok but I much prefer the control and smoothness of a clutch on a "mangle". My posts have been about the people boasting that they can do exactly what a mangle can do. But when a friendly challenge is proposed ( with a caveat of making a few quid for charity and socialise) no one seems to be up for it. In fact it was a little bit like someone defending religion and giving the excuse of God works in mysterious ways ploy when they haven't a sensible answer.

So anyone care to show me your skills and drills? ????????????????

I wait with a giddy sense of anticipation.

Ben , I think you will find that the fixed spool or threadline reel is not exactly a new kid on the block either . If you want to borrow a pin and sample the delights of the old way just say the word :)

Nope, argue was the correct word, but thanks for your apology anyway...:) and I've seen you trotting coops.... lurching would be a more apt word...

Mike, is it correct that the first threadline reel is dated back to around 1195 AD?

Fancy using something as old and outdated as that.......

Exactly Steve , nothing is new in fishing . Patrick , what I think you miss is that people like using ' old' equipment because [a] it still works and they enjoy it . Surely there is nothing wrong with that ? I have spent a few mins studying your posts and I really can't work out if you are just winding folks up for fun , or actually believe what you say , maybe a combination of the two ? Whatever the case , keep it up , as you promote some interesting responses and liven my lunch break visit to BFW :)

Mike if I have encouraged one person to look In, read my posts and evoked an appropriate reply then I'm a happy chap and that is what a forum is for. To discuss, DEBATE and encourage others for there thoughts on subjects.

Mr Williams I can guarantee that you have NEVER seen me run a float through running water. So stop telling porky pies and consume them
:D

Patrick, your challenge is certainly a tough one! Not sure i could drop a bait into a bucket at 20 yards with a fixed spool, never mind a pin! But I can lower a bait into a river from my rod tip very accurately :) All I need to do is bait up accurately, which, as it is also a bait dropper lowered from my rod tip, I am very good at.

But your challenge has interesting possibilities and I would like to see it attempted.

I think perhaps the man protests too much.....

Never asked you to dance. Fact is you pin boys are dangerous, irresponsible andfish under the rod tip obviously. As NOT ONE OF YOU HAS THE MINERALS TO HAVE A GO AT THE PATRICK CENTREPIN CASTING CHALLENGE.

TWO NIL TO ME NICEPIX

For amusement just reading back through this thread . Patrick what are '' the Minerals '' you refer to ?Where can I find them should I need to bring them along to the Patrick Challenge . Your advice would be appreciated ....

If your on the other side your poaching Mike.

As for minerals its all in my "everything you need to know about barbel" book which I'm selling on ebay at the bargain price of £99 if you're quick that is.

Could be my land on the ''other side'' , I will check with the etate manager ..I have looked up ''Minerals '' - they are'' [A] solid inorganic substance of natural occurence '' . I understand to Cockerneys '' Minerals'' mean something very organic indeed, but nevertheless of natural origin . Either way how will these help with casting distance and accuracy? Don't fob me off with your E book , casting a long way has nothing to do with catching more Barbel , as Mr Hamlyn remarks from his learned perspective they are the stupidist fish swimming do we need all this special bait and tactics and casting to the horizon to catch these witless creatures ? Re fish stupidity, I would argue that the stupidist fish in our rivers are minnows closely followed by small Perch both of which I have caught on bare hooks
