Wychwood Landing Net Handle

Hi - strange post, the twist lock on my landing net handle has stopped working, it doesn't seem to come apart. Has anyone had the same problem and is there a solution other than another expensive handle! Thanks.

They are expensive ain’t they. Never used one so wouldn’t be able to help. I’m surprised it doesn’t come apart or give some form of access to maintain it given its price tag.
Sounds to me like a non serviceable item and could well be throw away.
Go drennan on your next one. At least they give access in the back to address any issues.

Sounds like the nylon bushes have seized, all I can suggest is lubricate mechanism, get two people either end of pole and twist...
Good luck.

Still sounds like the clamp mechanism which squeezes the bush to grip the pole. Spray with WD40 or similar and leave overnight to penetrate. If it gets the grip working again you will need to wipe off the excess lubricant. Hope that works.

Anybody got any suggestions as to the best replacement - weight is an important factor as I do a lot of walking about.

In my opinion I wouldn’t look at another handle now since owning the drennan super specialist 1.8-3m
Yes people do have similar problems with them that you experienced but I believe that’s down to over tightening and simple lack of preventive care in most cases.
The difference is the drennan parts doing the business are fully accessible by unscrewing the cap at the butt end of the pole there for in most cases a problem can be resolved with a parts change rather than a new pole.
I look after mine very well and in 3 years of all round season use it’s never missed a single beat.
Very strong, nice and light and knocks the spots off inferior products.

I second the Drennan Gary but as Richard has said, look after it. There’s an interesting thread on here about “servicing” the Drennan.

I’ve used the Drennan for ten or more years and never had a problem with it,great piece of kit. 👍 👍

Hi Gary,
Remove the bottom cap, push the inner pole right down to the bottom so that the nylon bush is protruding, unscrew the bush and remove the inner pole taking it out from the top.
Clean the inner pole with white spirit, then drop a weight down inside the outer pole attached to a small piece of cloth and some line, then pull the cloth backwards and forwards cleaning the inside of the outer pole.
Then clean the nylon bush with the cloth and white spirit removing any grease.
Once all this is done and cleaned, replace the inner pole back into the outer pole, then replace the nylon bush, at this stage make sure that you leave the nylon bush loose, that means you screw it down to the bottom and turn it back a quarter of a turn, once this is done pull the inner pole back up and replace the bottom cap.
I have repaired 4 defective poles, and they have been successfully fixed and have not had any problems for over 3 years.
All this should take no more than 20 minutes.
Good luck.
Brian.

Thanks Brian that worked a treat - saved me a bit - I owe you one.

Your very welcome Gary, in the past there were a few problems with the nylon bush but tackle dealers were given a small stock of new bushes to replace the defective ones, Drennan also did alter the type of bushes, these were recognised by their colour, some were black and some I think were grey, they also altered the inner part of the pole, the newer ones are plain grey, the older ones are mottled the same as the outer pole but the ones you buy new all have a grey inner pole.
Brian.

I think the Gardner Extender is a lot less hassle than these twist lock mechs.

The Gardner takes no looking after hence my quote.

I've got to say I love my whitlock folding telescopic net!!! As sold to me by BFW'S own Clive shipman, 5 yrs ago, it's still going strong, the net has a few holes in it, that I've stitched up with braid, I will be looking for a net replacement though eventually, does anyone know where I can purchase a net replacement from? Sorry for hijacking the thread.
Cheers all

Following from the post above, I have 2 Fastnets in my garage in bits - Redport are supposed to the spares but I can get any joy from them. Would love to get them back to being useable as one was my late dads.
