Winter Thermal Suits....

Afternoon All You Barbel Anglers.....

Just starting to think about cold weather clothing maybe a winter one or two piece suit or a camo three quarter length parka, something that maybe does'nt cost an arm and a leg........Any thoughts or recomendations???????

German Army issue Goretex (flecktarn pattern) on ebay. You can get a jacket and overtrousers (with braces fitted) which are both waterproof and breathable. It's preferable to buy 'new' (not always easy) as the used ones may have lost their water repellency, which renders the breathability to virtually zero in the rain. Buy them loose-fitting so that you can wear the necessary number of layers of thermal clothing underneath, depending on the weather.

Some of the thermal suits advertised for fishing are good..... but only if you can park near your peg. If you have to walk any distance you can overheat. As mentioned above, the layering principle is the way to go.

I will second Anthony's choice of Nato surplus goretex, although I don't worry too much if the garment has lost its water repellant properties, because it is easy to cure that with a wash in non detergent cleaner (soap powder is fine), followed by the correct Nicwax re-proofer. Still a damned sight easier if is new though :D

Cheers, Dave.

John,

I have one of these (comes with a free one of these), and a pair of these. They are very good - incredibly warm and waterproof. I had a session on the Swale a couple of years ago when it was -1, and I didn't feel it - warm as toast. In fact, have a look on the Foss thread - I just posted a picture of me with a chub caught in rather, ahem, extreme conditions. My hands were nearly dropping off but the rest of me was lovely and warm.

I detest being cold. I have all the military foul weather gear that I could wish for and don't use it for fishing. Until last winter I'd not found any clothing that I was particularly happy with. I ended up with Nash Zero Tolerance down jacket and trousers and haven't ever been cold when wearing them even when the temperature has dropped several degrees below. They are too warm to wear walking to your peg. For the money that Climax are selling them (I'll bet it goes up towards RRP as winter kicks in:D) you can't go wrong. Can also negate the need for a sleeping bag on overnighters.;):D

All right for you big geezers Chris....the smallest size they have the trousers in is XL

I could camp out in one of the legs at that size :D

Cheers, Dave.

Sundridge igloo mmmmmmm toastie in sizes up to Giant:D

Managed through last winter (and that was jeffin cold) in ESP quilted breathable salopettes, sundridge sleep skin with fleece jacket and proper himalayan walkers socks from cotswold outdoor. Most of the time i was too hot. :)

Plenty to think about here, i like the tf gear stuff but where does it say about getting the free items? The nash zero tolerance also looks good and a bargain price, must check out the sundridge suits always been well respected.

Just had a look at those german flecktarn parka's but cant find any in the larger chest sizes, cheap though, are they warm? do they have much padding?

You'd be damned warm though!;):D They do have a drawstring waist and aren't that long in the leg if it's any consolation. I paid a similar price to the Climax offer and now I've got them I'd willingly pay more to replace them if I had too. If you prefer a more mobile approach they probably aren't for you. even when they fit well they puff up and make the wearer look like a green Michelin man.:D

Here's an alternative discounted source that have a few more sizes. If you are prepared to shop around and/or pay more you can find them elsewhere.
