Hi folks, i was thinking of taking my dad to the wingfield arms montford bridge in shrewsbury when the season opens as it has a camp site right by the river, has anybody fished this particular streach? is it any good ?or can anybody please reconmend a good site near the river with day tickets

many thanks carl

Formally the Old Swan........

Can get a bit busy.

There is another site over the road called Severn House Caravans (http://www.severnhousecaravans.co.uk/), not sure if they allow Tents tho.

There are also a number of others further down the river, like The Unicorn (Hampton Loade), Top Barn (http://www.topbarn.co.uk/htm/caravan.htm), Lickhill Manor (http://www.lickhillmanor.co.uk/display.php?showPage=tourers), Ketch (http://www.camping-guide.co.uk/worcs/ketch.htm) just to name a few.............

Really depends on what your looking for.........

thanks very much for the reply steve thats very good of you,
which one is more suited to my dad as he is in his late 60s and cant walk so far. is it not very good at the wingfield arms? or are those places better

many thanks carl

Its difficult to say Carl.

Everyone will have their own idea of what's good.

All the ones I've mentioned have fishing right on the site, so the access for your dad should be fine.
I'm sure the Wingfield arms is fine, but as with any camp/caravan site, the fish do tend to be quite pressured......
At the end of the day, people visit these sites to catch a few fish, if they weren't any good, they probably wouldn't get many visitors........

Where about are you coming from?

If your up north you might not want to travel another 1-1/2 hours to reach some of the sites further south, so that might be a factor.

hi Steve yes we are coming from up north macclesfield to be exact
we dont mind travelling a bit further if the fishing and surroundings are better
we have both been barbel fishing for a long time but havent ventured down your part of the woods much atall so all the info is gratefully recieved

many thanks carl

And for 150 years prior to that it was the Wingfield Arms as it is built on land belonging to the Wingfield estate.

My wife was brought up in Montford Bridge and that pub was our local when we were going out in the late 70's.

The fishing on that stretch is slightly above average for the area due to the amount of bait which goes into that part of the river compared to the surrounding area.

The pub is pretty good and average priced, you can camp as close to the bank as you wish, in fact you can camp on the access to one of the favoured swims which at normal levels is a small sandy beach on the apex of a left hand bend and is obvious when you look downstream from the bridge.

If you fancy a change of venue for food the Four Crosses at Bicton (a mile down the road), does a £5, eat all you can, lunch time, hot Buffet, if you fancy it check it out and arrive early to ensure you get a table. I can recommend the Station Bitter.
