Why is the Severn record so low ?

Unfortunately the larger barbel are really just an indication of the demise in numbers. I would happily swap size for quantity in seeing more of those smaller males. We seem to be putting a higher emphasis on weight as to the quality of our target species which really is short sighted.
Couldn't agree more. Wensum, Ouse, Kennett - all shadows of their former selves and all had fish of British record size. Id be happier seeing lots of 3lb fish on stretches I fish than waiting days or weeks for a good double. In the 80s I didn't think the rivers I fished would ever become tricky and/or large stretches totally barren.
